Nor the Doctor to the Island?

If I hadn't been at the conference myself I wouldn't have believed it.  My paper had caused such a stir - thankfully it was nothing like the time that Dr Bodet suggested that plasma burns could be as effectively treated with homeopathy, god knows I don't need to see that kind of in-fighting again, but it wasn't quite received in the way I ( Read more... )

"Hullo," Ace said cheerfully, her jacket hanging over her shoulder from her fingers. She wasn't much made for talking to bewildered looking strangers, but she was feeling nice today. "Are you new, then?" She stuck out her free hand - it was a good thing to make a Gesture, at the very least. Very important, that.

"I'm Ace. It's nice to meet you."

Despite everything Ando had told me, I was somehow not expecting to actually run into anyone else. Not that being suddenly confronted by an attractive woman is necessarily a bad thing.

"Dr. Julian Bashir." I reply, taking her hand. "And you, Ace. I arrived, for lack of a better word, about an hour ago."

She eyed him, trying to figure out how thrown he was. "Look, do you want some tea or anything?" Her mouth quirked into a half-smile.

"Or coffee. I know someone who makes the best." She shoved her hair back out of her face with a hand, swinging her jacket to hang over her arm.

I have to smile at the suggestion of coffee, my last cup was hours ago. "Coffee would be great, thank you. Lead the way."

I'm feeling a little uncertain of my surroundings, but I'm fairly confident that the crew on the station are going to figure out where I am and how to rescue me. What I dont know is how long I might be here before they do. It's entirely possible that time moves differently here, who knows how much time has passed in the real world? They could beam me up any moment.

"Where are you from, Ace?"

"Oh, here and there." Her eyes twinkled when she said that bit - there was something about being a time traveler that stuck in your brain, that made you a bit proud compared to the rest.

"Perivale - in England, mostly. Some other places. You?"

I notice things, both because of my training and also all the enhancements, and there was something in Ace's eyes when she answered.

"England originally, but I've been living on Deep Space 9. 'Here and there' sounds like it might have a bit of a story attached."

"Oh, space ship that travels through time and space. You know. The usual. Come on," She said, barely containing her laughter as she walked back to the Compound with this Julian Bashir.

"'s called a TARDIS."

The Tardis? It sounded familiar but I couldn't place it. Perhaps I read about it in a report?

"Through time as well? We have only managed the space part, so far. Well, there have been a few occasions a ship or crew has accidentally travelled in time, and people from the future have popped up now and again of course. I suppose the more approriate question for you then would be when are you from?"

"1989. Or... well, came directly from 1944, but you know. All relative." She shrugged, and stepped over a log. "Wotchit-"

She turned to look back at him. "You?" The Compound was in sight now, and Ace was already looking forward to Ianto's coffee.

"Thank you." I replied, stepping over the log. "The twentieth century? That's amazing. Around the time of World War 2?" Fascinating, the things this young woman must have witnessed.

"I'm from twenty-fourth." I pause for a moment, realising I am going to have to ask a question that I maybe don't actually want the answer to. "Is this island out of time? What year is it here?"

"The calendars we've found say 2007, I think - some of them are a bit older. There's people here from all sorts of times, though." She shrugged. "But the direct was from World War II. The relative... that's from when I was born."

"Incredible. How did end up on board the Tardis?" I don't actually know a great deal about that period in history but I know for sure that time travel? Not exactly common.

"I- .... I was on another planet, and found by the person who owns her." She shrugged, changing the subject. "This is probably the best coffee you've ever tasted, believe me." She walked into the kitchen, and immediately started rummaging in the cupboard, tugging the Thermos out of her rucksack.

The first thing I noticed about the kitchen was the lack of a replicator, or anything that looked like it might be a replicator. Which makes sense for 2007, I think, but I have next to no idea how to go about preparing food without one.

"I think some good coffee is absolutely in order."

Ace hummed as she set it to brew, the beans harvested by Ianto himself.

She closed her eyes and inhaled as the pure scent wafted through the kitchen, and smiled over her shoulder. "So. What should I call you?"

Lord? Master? "Julian. That coffee smells amazing. I dont remember the last time I had a cup of coffee that didnt come from a replicator. Back on Earth while I was at med school I think. So just about a lifetime ago." I said, smiling.
