You should see me on a bad day.

Adora Belle did not much like the Compound. There were too many people that weren't golems or even from the same planet as her. But, occasionally, she found it necessary to visit the structure. Clean clothes and running water were too much to pass up ( Read more... )

Bill Pardy, just like most'a the men hailing from Wheelsy, South Carolina, was built for Recreation. This weren't to say he didn't take his job seriously. Weren't much in the world Bill took more seriously than his job, apart from the welfare of one Starla Grant, and he'd been that kid (you know the type) who knew from the time fifth grade rolled 'round just what he wanted to do with his life.

But in a whole lotta ways, Bill had more southerner in him than most entire counties. When Bill Pardy sat down for a speck of shut-eye, or maybe just a real quick sit-down, he was there t' stay. Weren't nothing quick about it. Didn't need a whole lotta excitement, just some peace and quiet and the man'd doze with the best of 'em.

He weren't really the type t' get twitchy.

Walking in t' grab himself another book, somethin' to tide himself over 'til his patrol started later that night, Bill gave the woman a polite nod. Folks tended to get bored 'round the island. Bill couldn't see how the pace was all that much different than Wheelsy. On most days, that is.

Polite nods weren't Adora Belle's style. Impolite nods, however, she could write a book about. There was a certain way you could cant your chin or twitch your head that implied she wanted nothing more than to see the other person fall into a pit of scorpions.

In this particular case, though, she managed to keep her nod to the sort that implied she merely wished to see the other person lose a limb or two.

It wasn't her fault. She was just born antisocial. Even the nurses had stayed away.

However..."Are you in need of anger management?"

Bill gave pause, his brow screwin' up just a bit in thought, and decided, "Well, no, ma'am. Not today."

"Then you might not want to peruse that bookshelf," Adora Belle advised. "It's only giving out guides on how to manage rage at the moment. Oh, and smoking."

She scowled. If only it was providing a recipe for decent, nicotine-laden coffee.

Archin' a brow, Bill reached out and pulled a book free, the very first one he touched, and held it up for her t' see. The Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball 1996.

"Not quite fine literature, I'll give you that. See a couple'a sci-fi paperbacks, too. This thing been givin' you trouble?"

Adora Belle sighed. It figured, didn't it?

"It seems to think I need to manage my anger better," she said huffily, "Either that, or quit smoking." She didn't ask how a bookshelf could think, because she'd been to the Unseen University's Library a couple of times*.

*Sometimes the books there tried to eat people, or knock over the shelves they were chained to. This one, in comparison, was quite tame.
