But in a whole lotta ways, Bill had more southerner in him than most entire counties. When Bill Pardy sat down for a speck of shut-eye, or maybe just a real quick sit-down, he was there t' stay. Weren't nothing quick about it. Didn't need a whole lotta excitement, just some peace and quiet and the man'd doze with the best of 'em.
He weren't really the type t' get twitchy.
Walking in t' grab himself another book, somethin' to tide himself over 'til his patrol started later that night, Bill gave the woman a polite nod. Folks tended to get bored 'round the island. Bill couldn't see how the pace was all that much different than Wheelsy. On most days, that is.

In this particular case, though, she managed to keep her nod to the sort that implied she merely wished to see the other person lose a limb or two.
It wasn't her fault. She was just born antisocial. Even the nurses had stayed away.

"Not quite fine literature, I'll give you that. See a couple'a sci-fi paperbacks, too. This thing been givin' you trouble?"

"It seems to think I need to manage my anger better," she said huffily, "Either that, or quit smoking." She didn't ask how a bookshelf could think, because she'd been to the Unseen University's Library a couple of times*.
*Sometimes the books there tried to eat people, or knock over the shelves they were chained to. This one, in comparison, was quite tame.
