Angua and Sally had been put in the same bedroom. Angua tried to feel good about that. The woman wasn't to know. Anyway, it was nice to get between clean sheets, even if the room had a slightly musty smell. More must, less vampire, she thought; look on the bright side.

In the darkness, she opened one eye.

Someone had moved silently across the room. ( Read more... )

Things that Bennet did not expect when returning from his morning walk were many. People in his bed just happened to be one of them. Some part of him sighed with relief that it wasn't any number of people who might have it out for him. "Lost?" he inquired politely, closing the door firmly behind him.

Angua awoke to the sound of a man's voice. It wasn't Vimes, or Igor, or anyone who had even the smallest right to be in her room without knocking this early in the morning. She opened her eyes. The man wasn't the only thing unfamiliar, so was the bed and the room. The lights, especially.

Hackles raised, Angua sat up quickly, her eyes staring daggers into the man. *

"What is this?"

* Or, better yet, Detritus' Piecemaker. More deadly, and it would convey her anger to the walls and ceiling as well.

Bennet hardly moved and didn't even put his hands on a weapon. Instead, he simply stood there and stared down at the woman with a rather bemused arch of his brow. "Well, most commonly, it's my bedroom," he informed her wryly. "Which you've somehow managed to find your way into."

His tone was pleasant and polite.

Amiable.

Angua didn't care for the man's casual tone, in fact it only managed to annoy her further.

"I didn't find my way anywhere. I was sleeping," she said, her voice low and threatening.

She tried to catch a scent, some clue as to where she was because she doubted it was the Waynsbury place, but everything was...dull, weak. Fear grew in the pit of her stomach, but she pushed it away.

"Where have I been taken to?"

"You," Bennet continued, patient as he could be, "are in my bed. So, while you may have been somewhere else upon going to sleep, you've found yourself to a place you don't exactly belong."

"I certainly do not," Angua agreed as she got out of the bed, more huffy than she would have liked. But gods, she couldn't smell a thing.

She passed the man, eyes on him the entire time, and made to open the door. "How far is this from Ham-on-Koom?" She hoped that was where she still was, but she had a bad feeling this place was far from there.

"I don't keep ham in my bed," Bennet added mildly as he took his glasses off to polish them while thinking to himself, neither ham or green eggs, Sam. "And the last I looked, I was koom-free."

"That's hilarious," Angua said dryly. He obviously wasn't much of a threat if he was going to just stand there and polish his spectacles. Still, Angua couldn't shake the feeling that there would be guards or an ambush waiting for her outside the door. Someone had to be doing something to bugger with his nose.

She pushed open the door, ears and eyes open, but all she was met with was a large expanse of jungle.

"What is this?" she asked once more.

Bennet easily slid his hands into the pockets of his suit, watching the woman curiously as he left his bed well enough alone for the moment. "I think we should start with you," he said, closing the door. "Who are you?"

Angua's expression grew stony. She didn't like being trapped. Instead of answering she made to change...but nothing happened. No fur, no fangy wolf smile, no claws.

Now she was Very Concerned.

She wanted to answer with a snippy 'you should know', still unconvinced he hadn't brought her here, but she wasn't sure she could take his playing dumb routine any longer.

"Angua von Uberwald," she said, emphasizing the Uberwald. You just don't take on a werewolf all alone like this, she wanted to add. "Sergeant of Ankh-Morpork's City Watch. I came here with Commander Vimes and several trolls. They'll be expecting me." If he wasn't frightened of her, surely that had to mean something.

To Bennet, that sounded like silly gibberish and made-up names, but he didn't say any of that aloud. Instead, he offered his demure, nonthreatening, fatherly smile. "Trolls. Is that right? Well, Miss von Uberwald, off you should be."

"Oh, just like that?" Angua said flippantly, starting to lose her cool.

"What did you do to me?" she demanded, leaning toward him, her body tense and ready to fight.

If Bennet had done anything to her, then she wouldn't have the slightest idea that he had. But in this case, he didn't do anything.

When she tensed, he relaxed, hands still in his pockets. "Nothing except come home to find you in my bed, Miss," he said apologetically, polite as ever.

"I can't change," Angua growled, infuriated with him. He was acting just like Carrot, all innocence when, she suspected, he was anything but. "I can't smell a damn thing!"

"Do you need something to clear up your sinuses?" Bennet tried to guess at what the woman might be playing at. Maybe she had a condition.

"I'm a werewolf," she said in a burst, her voice low and desperate.
