Cooper-Petrelli Wedding
Every time Gwen's stepped outside today, she's turned her eyes skyward. Persistent clouds had darkened the sky all morning, and if the idea of an overcast wedding wasn't bad enough, there was always the chance of rain. It'll be fine, Rob had told her, but she'd worried anyway.
Just now, however, the sky's a brilliant blue; clear and wide and endless over the shimmering ocean. The cloud cover burnt off with the afternoon sun, and if it rains, it won't be anytime soon. It's one less thing to worry about on a day when she can't seem to stop worrying about everything.
Over and over again, Gwen's been told to relax. Tosh told her when she asked about the food, Daisy told her when she was doing Gwen's hair and makeup and helping her into the gorgeous dress the box had provided over a month earlier. Rob had physically redirected her when at the last moment, as they emerged from the Compound to make the walk to the beach, she'd wanted to check on the setup at the Hub one last time.
Relax, they'd all said. It'll be fine. Gwen's not certain why she can't do what they've asked.
There was a bonfire once, not too long after Gwen had first arrived. She can't remember who had thrown it or why, but when she reaches the end of the pathway and the white shore beyond, she realizes that's the only other time she's seen so many people gathered on the beach together. The memory is fleeting, but it makes her smile. Ianto had been there. She'd stolen his drink.
The murmuring of the crowd gets louder and then immediately quiets with her approach. Rob goes on, and the group splits neatly down the middle for him on instinct. Briefly, she catches sight of Peter at the other end of the makeshift aisle, Nathan beside him, and she blushes. It's Hiro she can see best, standing at the very end of the aisle, grinning as if he were the one getting married.
Without thinking about it, she reaches for the Doctor's hand and squeezes it hard, like a lifeline.
