Remus was standing at the bookshelf, perusing its contents. Though he did not intend to start the second term - which he knew he needed to begin planning quite soon with Klaus and the rest of the staff - until October, he had decided to begin his attempts early to try and coax some decent school materials out of the shelf, in this case writing paper.
At his second glance along the top shelf, he spotted what looked to be one of those Muggle spiral-bound notebooks and reached up to pluck it off the shelf. Mead 1-Subject Notebook, the cover said, and it did indeed contain lined writing paper. Remus smiled, pleased, and wondered if the shelf would be charitable enough to provide him with one of these for each of his students.
He flipped through it idly, scanning for any writing among the pages, but stopped when a folded bit of paper slid from the middle of the book and fell to the floor. He bent down to pick it up and immediately saw that it wasn't paper - it was parchment. A fairly large, folded piece of worn-out parchment that looked like it had been folded and unfolded many times.
Remus didn't need to open the parchment to know what it was; he had seen it so many times he recognised it immediately. He opened it anyhow, moving to spread it out on the table. It was blank, as he knew it would be, and he also knew that it would not be activated. It looked like any other blank piece of parchment, sitting there, but Remus would have known the Marauder's Map anywhere, activated or not.
"I solemnly swear I am up to no good," he whispered, touching his fingers lightly to the parchment's surface, the teenage voices of Moony, Padfoot, Prongs and Wormtail echoing the words in his head.
