Yeah, it was still a miracle. Billy looked down at his daughter and smiled. A fucking miracle. So what if he hadn't made her, technically speaking at least, he couldn't have loved her any more if he had. Not that he wouldn't like to have more kids that were his on a genetic level too, but right now she was all he could ask for. Dany wasn't the only one who'd settled into parenthood and started to think more about the here and now.
Alys was lying on her blanket under the shade of a kind of palm that had fan-like leaves. Some of those were banana trees, Billy knew, but this one didn't seem to have any visible fruit. It was still a good spot for a baby, though. Well in the shade and sheltered from the reflection of the sun on the sand too. Right now she was busy grabbing her own feet and pulling at a few straws of grass that hung down over her and this, in Billy's mind, proved that he had the smartest baby alive. The things she could do at only six months...
He had a mission, though, apart from watching Alys, and that was the toy-making project. It was time to try again, he'd decided. Owen might think he should stick to stuffed toys, but he was pretty sure his very meager sewing skills didn't take him that far. So he'd decided to try wood. His dad had taught him how to whittle things when he was a kid; they'd sat on the harbor front on weekends, either fishing or carving stuff out of wood, so Billy felt it shouldn't be too hard to figure out how to make things like little wooden animals and such. No point in making cars as there were no on the island, but there were animals. So he'd make those. And not only for Alys. He wanted to make something for Eostre's twins too and for Jane's baby, due any day now.
Billy leaned back agains the trunk of a more solid palm and started working. Alys was gurgling, the sea was making soft sounds and he was feeling pretty good, really. Good start for a project.
