It had been a productive day for Marian, for all that Sir Vimes had been blustering around about thieves in the office earlier. She had paid him no mind, continuing on with the paperwork as Anne had shown her. It was near dinner when she realised her neck was sore and her hand cramped. That she had written the last few lines in latin and not ( Read more... )

Silence had only come in to eat--he could catch his own game and frequently did, but spending so much time alone in his shelter with only his horse for company wears on him, and he misses the feasts and gatherings he had attended back in England. The tourney was excellent, and he has had a little more company around his fire of late, but some nights it is not as enough as others.

Finished, he is walking past the office when he hears someone crying; the faint and shallow sort that means one is trying not to be heard.

"Forgive me," he begins, before he sees who it is. And then--"Lady Marian?"

When she heard a voice she brushed the tears away with her palm, looking up and forcing a smile onto her face. "My Lord," she quickly closed the chest, "I am sorry, i ddi not hear anyone approach."

"Forgive me," Silence says, a little awkwardly. "I only heard distress, I did not mean to disturb thee. Art thou well?"

"I am fine," Marian responded quickly, her face closing down for a moment before she remembered this was a man she called friend.

"No, I am not fine. I have found myself at the butt of one of this place's jokes."

Anya wasn't about to go into the IPD office, but when she heard an unmistakable clinking she broke her own rule. Staring at the woman with the chest of coins her jaw fell. "Is that money?"

Marian looked up in shock at not having heard anyone enter, "This?" She shut the lid of the chest quickly, not wanting to look at it anymore. "Yes, from my time it is. Why? What do you want of it?" She looked at the other woman suspiciously.

Her face fell when the chest shut, though Anya remembered that lusting after other people's money wasn't what most people did. It was in the list of 'things you should never do because people will suspect you haven't always been human An, and besides, it's kinda creepy.' Anya suspected Xander had the list written up somewhere. "No reason," She said, trying to look nochalant. "I just thought if there was money on the island it would help us with a formalised system of barter and exchange."

What the woman said made sense, but Marian wasn't quite willing to simply give this money away, not when there seemed to be no need of it on this island. "Do we need such a thing? We are fed, and cared for here. Would commerce improve that?"

During his shift the evening before, Gus had managed to leave the book that he was reading in the office, and he thought he'd nip in and retrieve it before poking his head into the lab to see if Mayko was around and wanted coffee.

He stopped in the doorway through when he saw what was very obviously an upset Marian.

"Marian?"

Marian rubbed at her eyes, hoping it was not plain that she had been crying, forgetting to shut the lid of the chest on the desk. "Gus, I am sorry, I didn't hear you. Give me a moment and I'll be out of your way."

"Oh, don't be silly," said Gus, shaking his head and coming to stand beside her. "I just came in to pick up a book I left, and..."

He glanced down into the chest and his eyes widened.

"...Jesus."

While not an exclamation she would have made, it brought Marian back to herself, slamming the lid down on the chest. "It is a strange place this island, is it not?"
