The scream was what allerted Billy. He hadn't heard anything like that ever before, but there was such a... he wasn't sure there was a word for it, that sound. The emotion behind it. He wasn't even sure it was human. But he looked anyway.

What he saw made him sad more than shocked and for a second he had a flash of other dead bodies, covered in blood. Queenan's. Costello's crowd. That guy French shot in the middle of his fucking dinner. Billy shook his head. This wasn't the same. This was a fucking kid with a dead kid in his arms.

"Fuck," he mumbled and slowly walked closer, cautious and carefully, knowing the kid was likely scared. His voice was soft when he spoke, still a few yards away. "Hey..."

Perhaps not the best thing to say, but he had to allert this one to his presence before doing anything.

Nothing had almost gotten used to the answering silence. His throat was raw, and he thought of lapping up the last drops of blood oozing from the wound, looking for something to soothe him, to settle his stomach, but suddenly, the very idea revolted him. All that white hair, fried brittle with peroxide, fluttering in the breeze, and Nothing pushed it away from Laine's face, that sweet and impassive face. If he tried hard enough, maybe, just maybe, he could convince himself that Laine was only sleeping.

But then there was a voice, and Nothing startled, drawing in a painful gasp and gathering the dead weight of Laine's body to his chest.

The sound he made wasn't words at all. Choked and desperate. O god, o god... Where was he? Please, let him come back to tell me what to do.

Billy had stepped a bit closer and the boy - Billy was guessing he was somewhere around thirteen or fourteen - was not saying a word, but he knew he'd been heard. The sound was again less than human and something about it made his hair stand up at the back of his neck. But he couldn't just walk away from the kid. And shit... the other kid, the dead one (about the same age by the look of him) had been chewed on. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. This was not good. Freaky too and Billy wondered if the one alive had done some of the biting. Still, despite the shock of that, he spoke again. "It's okay, kid," he said and hoping, perhaps even praying, that he was right about that.

No no no. No, it wasn't okay. It wasn't okay. Where the fuck was he? They'd been just over the Virginia border, making good time, no where near all this sand and surf and palm trees. No where near this man whom Nothing had never seen before, approaching him like you might approach a frightened animal. A cowering dog. Maybe that's what he was now. A predator.

He barred his teeth, blunt and streaked with blood. "It's not. Stay away," he warned, trying to sound bigger and older and more dangerous and important than he was. But he wasn't any of those things. He was only Nothing.

Okay, those were words and they made Billy relax a good deal more. It clearly wasn't the speaker's intention that they should calm him but they did. The irony was worth a smile, but not in the face of a boy with a dead boy in his arms. "All right, so it's not okay. To be honest, it doesn't look okay either, but I had to figure out if you were in shock or some shit first."

Shock? No, he wasn't in shock. It felt a bit like a dream, everything dulled and far away, like he'd drifted out of himself and was watching from someplace else, but he knew... he knew exactly what had happened. What he'd done.

"Who are you?"

Where is he? Zillah... where is he?

"I'm Billy and I live around here," he said, stepping a little closer still, but staying outside the boy's personal sphere. He still didn't want to spook the kid or make him more hostile. "And who are you, then?" Absurdely normal question in an absurdely abnormal situation.

The question... it's so innocuous. So normal. And for a moment he doesn't know how to answer. His throat closes up, like it used to every time he had to get up in front of the class in school. Back before he stopped caring.

"I'm Nothing."

Billy felt as if he'd been kicked. It hurt to hear someone say that - especially someone that young. "You're not," he said, his voice softer than usual. "If that's what you want to be called, fine by me, but you are not nothing. No one ever is."

Nothing looked up through a curtain of lank, black hair, studying the man with the same kind of detached curiosity he might feel while watching a nature program. The complex social structure of the modern ape. Modern human. All the same.

"My name is Nothing."

"All right." The look was slightly creepy, but Billy just returned it with a calm one of his own. "Where did you come from, Nothing? I take if that you were somewhere else a moment ago..." Because that was the most logical explanation for what was in front of him. It was also less scary than the alternative - that there was something here that would bite and bleed young boys.

"Missing Mile," he answered hollowly, an easy lie that came with no thought at all. The man wouldn't know the difference anyway. It didn't matter.

The body in his arms was cooling. He could feel it. The limbs growing heavier, lifeless and waxy like a broken store mannequin. Laine would start to rot soon, flesh coming loose and that brittle white hair falling away. Becoming part of the earth.

There would be bones and then there would be nothing.

Not that Billy knew where the fuck that was, but judging by the accent it was in the States. And there was no ignoring the dead boy any longer either. "So... what happened?" He looked from dead boy to living, wondering what to do. They'd need someone official here, he was sure of that. And as much as he knew that, he also didn't want to leave the kid to any fate. Not even here.

[ooc: I figured we'd let it run a bit and perhaps end it somehow that will let Billy know someone is coming. Because he wont let up if we don't *S* You know him.]

"I don't... I didn't know what else to do," I said, and it isn't a lie but it's not the whole truth either. A half truth. Plenty for a stranger.

[That's fine. Maybe he hears someone coming, or goes to get help.]

"What else to do than what?" Billy said. There was still that softness to his voice, but he wasn't going to just let the kid squirm out of this one. "I'm guessing you didn't do this, not alone anyway. In fact, I'm guessing you didn't exactly want this to happen to him either." Those cries were easiest explained as grief. He knew about that. He had, a few times, heard the cries people can make when someone dies. Someone they care about.

Wrong. He guessed wrong. There might have been a push. He might have been nudged in this direction, urged and watched with eager, calculating green eyes. But this... Laine had been his doing. He'd taken the first taste. He'd felt Laine's life drain away.

He hadn't wanted to be alone. They would've abandoned him if he'd said no. He knew that... but it looked like they'd abandoned him anyway.

"Where are we?" he asked instead, looking blankly toward the swelling tide. Maybe he'd drop Laine into the water. A watery grave. Very Poe. Laine would have liked it.

No... No he wouldn't have. He would've been terrified. He'd been terrified and Nothing had done it anyway. Held him down. Drained him drop by drop...
