The End of the Story

“Er…Remus? Do you think the bookshelf is trying to tell us something?”

On Friday, Bill and Remus had been perusing the shelves in hopes of finding a few more copies of The Catcher in the Rye, the final book Remus’ literature class was to read that term, and they hadn’t had any luck thus far. Then Bill had spotted the books, and had pointed them out to Remus.

Two copies each of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It had seemed the bookshelf was giving them a blatantly obvious hint that they ought to read them, and after exchanging a ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’ look, they had both taken a copy of each book from the shelves.

Bill had opened Deathly Hallows first, checking the inside cover. “Well, we’ve read the first five already, so these must be six and seven…Yeah, this one says, ‘We now present the seventh and final instalment in the epic tale of Harry Potter.’ Epic tale?” he'd said incredulously, glancing up at Remus, who'd shrugged.

“I suppose this J.K. Rowling person thought it to be,” he'd replied casually, studying the cover of Half-Blood Prince. “In a way, perhaps it was, at least for Harry. Have you heard of anyone called the Half-Blood Prince? I remember Harry asking me about that, around Christmastime. I’ve never heard of such a person.”

Bill had shaken his head. “There aren’t any wizarding princes, we both know that,” he'd said. “I’ve no sodding idea. Any clue what deathly hallows are?”

It had been Remus’ turn to shake his head, then. “No, I haven’t. But I imagine we’re about to find out.”

Now it was late Monday evening, and they were both sat in the rec room, finishing the seventh book in the series about Harry. Remus shut his copy first, and not long after, Bill followed suit, and for several moments all they could do was stare at each other.

"Remus, I-" Bill started, but Remus cut him off with a shake of his head.

"It's all right, Bill," he said, even though it wasn't, not really. He'd nearly dropped the book in shock. He really needed a fag, and he had no idea how he was going to tell Tonks - or even if he should tell her. "Well, now you know exactly why everyone from home is surprised to see your face intact." He chuckled dryly.

"Too fucking right," Bill replied with a nod, his hand going to his own cheek as if to check that the scars hadn't appeared there as he'd read. "Remus, do you think all that's true? What it says happened in the seventh book?"

Remus was silent for a few moments, thinking. "Well, as a whole I'd say it's likely. It might not have all the details correct, but the book recounting Harry's sixth year was generally accurate, at least the bits I knew of."

"Yeah," Bill said, then fell silent again. Finally he shook his head slightly, as though rousing himself. "Either way, the whole thing's odd."

[And now, after reading all weekend, they're both caught up on their canon! The books are sitting next to them and they're both sort of o_O, so it's probably somewhat evident what they've been doing. Old and new welcome, and ST/late tags just fine.]
