Another Monday, another clinic shift.

Simon liked routines. They helped him know what was going on, what would happen, what was required of him. They were reassuring, set him at ease. There was a sense of stability in routines that Simon appreciated. The fact that there was very little to no real routine to life on Serenity had been one of the ( Read more... )

Once things had settled some, Inara had begun exploring the Compound. Everyone seemed so certain Serenity was entirely grounded. If that did, in fact prove to be the case, she would need to be better acquainted with the place. Finding somewhere else to stay soon was also on her list of things to do, though she knew already the crowded Compound would not do. For the moment, the familiarity of Serenity was a comfort, but she hadn't forgotten what she had intended to say to Mal only a few short hours ago.

When she passed the clinic, she saw Simon inside, and stopped in the doorway. "You're in your element here," she observed, smiling. "Treating conditions other than bullet holes must make for a nice change."

Simon looked up from his book, a little surprised, but he soon relaxed when he saw who was at the door, and smiled in return.

"Yes, instead I have dinosaur wounds and small children," he replied, shrugging his shoulders easily. "When there even are patients. But it does have it's advantages, you're right." Pausing, Simon marked his place in his book with his pen, and stood up. "How are you handling the..." Simon attempted a gesture with his hands, and failed at communicating anything significant. "Well, the everything."

"The everything is quite well," Inara said, offering a small smile as she walked further into the clinic. "Or, I imagine, as well as it can be, given that I've apparently been transported to a magical island populated by more lunatics than even my previous lodgings held." The notion that the rest of the crew came from sometime after her was still one she was having difficulty grasping, but there came a point when it was hard to still think of everything happening as simply a dream.

"Well, that's good," Simon replied with a honest smile. He had missed Inara, and had never realized how much of a calming influence she was on the ship. An influence which, at least Simon felt, was sorely missed. "I've been here weeks and it still hasn't gotten any ... less maddening."

"At least you've still got a job to do." Inara's smile widened, turning wry as she arched an eyebrow. "I've looked into it and this place doesn't seem to be much for having an economy. Not having the option of getting paid makes my line of work a little more difficult." Still, she would find some way to get paid or somewhere else to live. There were no other options that she could see.

Simon smiled, almost laughing, but refraining. "I can see how that would be a problem," he agreed. "You could still try to have something of a clientèle here, but.. I'm not sure how much of the island's population would actually be.. suitable." There was after all the primary issue of finding someone even close to Inara's class, and then the problem of making sure that someone understood exactly what a companion was. Simon was not confident as to the general populace's ability to reach both requirements. "Or teach. There is a school. I haven't paid it much attention, but.. at least some people might be eager to learn."

"There's an idea." Inara did laugh, then, shaking her head, folding her arms. "And how many of the people here are young enough, do you think? When I trained, we began very young. Years of work and preparation before we could begin to think of taking on clients. This is hardly a border planet. I suspect the concept will be beyond them - at least at first." Still, the idea wasn't without its merits.

"This is, I think, worse than a border planet," Simon admitted quietly, idly glancing out the door to see if any resident passing by might actually take offense to what he said. "But, you might be able to find a few. Explain the idea and the custom to them -- or at least start to. At worst you'll have something to occupy your time."

"At best," Inara agreed, smiling, "I may even find a pupil worth teaching." It seemed unlikely in these parts, but time to occupy appeared to be something they had in plenty here. "Well, it's worth considering."

Simon nodded in agreement, crossing his arms over his chest comfortably. "Otherwise you're rather ... limited in activities," he remarked. "The people here are.. nice enough. Some are stranger than others, such that would probably do well in Jayne's company. It's all a little.." He paused, searching for a word. "Quaint. But I'm sure you'll have no problem adjusting. Provided there was never a previous you here," he added, somewhat under his breath.

Inara arched an eyebrow at that, watching Simon. "A previous me?" she echoed wryly. "I would think being here is something I would remember." An island inhabited by people who would do well in Jayne's company. Well. Quaint wasn't exactly the word Inara would have used for such a place, but it did the job.

"Only, you don't," Simon said, rolling his eyes and heaving a light sigh. "You just have to live with the consequences. Apparently, no one remembers anything that happens here. People disappear, go -- presumably -- back to where they came from, and it's no different for them. There was another me here... only months ago, apparently."

"Another you." Inara smiled wryly, head inclining toward him. "I guess one Simon Tam isn't enough for the universe," she teased. It was easy to see that whatever Simon had done... before had done things that hadn't made Simon's life easy. At least, it was easy once Inara could follow her own train of logic, distinguishing between versions of the same man. "What did... you do?"

"It would seem so," Simon agreed with a small smile, catching onto her teasing. Inara was never so difficult to read as Kaylee, or any other woman for that matter. Probably because she was a Companion, but Simon did not give that much thought. "I.. managed to upset the entire crew. Well, with the exception of Shepherd Book it would seem. And really I can't think of a time when the Captain or Jayne are particularly pleased with me, so I'm not sure how much mind I should pay to that." He sighed and let his arms fall, arms swinging loosely by his sides. "I got into, it would seem, a rather serious relationship with another man. And didn't tell anyone."

The last sentence was said hesitantly. Simon knew how close Inara and Kaylee were, and he knew how the previous him had upset Kaylee. He had to hope that Inara would give him some sort of lenience.

"Oh." Inara blinked at him, actually startled. "Oh, I -" Her brow raised and she nodded slowly. "Well, I... have to admit, I never figured you were... Didn't tell anyone?" If it were serious, she couldn't imagine Simon not at least speaking to his sister. River was everything to him. Oh, renci de fozu, she'd have to speak to Kaylee about this and see if she was alright. She couldn't have taken it very well... Mostly, though, Inara was bewildered. If Simon wanted to enter into a relationship with another man, well, that was entirely his right, of course; she just never would have imagined he would.

"No one," Simon confirmed with a shallow nod. He glanced up at Inara and bit at his bottom lip. "And I'm.. not. As far as I can tell. I mean, I've never.." He took a breath before plunging on awkwardly. "Had those sort of feelings before. So, I don't know. Maybe I am. But this would be the first I've known of it."
