It was really amazing how you'd let yourself go when no one could see you. Not that Claude had ever been one to care much what he looked like anyway, but add that to the invisible thing and you go to the state he was in when Peter found him - grizzly beard and hot dog gut (well, hot dog and pretzels - it's just so much easier to steal from street ( Read more... )

Trance was familiar with most of the trees in the area and, since it was a forest, used them as balance practice when she wanted to get around and no one was around to say hello to. That was what she'd been doing when she noticed Claude doing pushups and she decided to stop to watch for a few minutes. It actually reminded her of watching Tyr work. They even did their pushups the same way - one-handed. After a few minutes, she moved to leave when one of the small branches she was using as a foothold collapsed beneath her feet and she tumbled to the ground right in front of Claude.

"Oww."

That was definitely enough to startle Claude as well, who wound up losing his balance, and with a mouthful of grass. He turned over onto his back, and then turned his head and looked at her. "Nice of you to drop in," he said dryly.

"Believe me," Trance said wryly. "I didn't plan on it being that way." She slowly got to her feet, wincing the entire way. "That hurt." She stretched, feeling her back pop a little and some of her muscles protested, but she seemed fine enough, if a bit bruised.

Claude was still lying on his back in the grass, looking as if he had no intention of getting up. "Falling from a tree tends to have that effect."

"Well it's not as if I meant to," she said sharply. But there was a smile on her face and she sat down next to him. "I haven't seen you since you were younger." She grinned. "No impromptu swimming sessions."

He turned his head so he could look at her. "And now I'm nothing but disappointment, I imagine."

"And know you're...?" She trailed off, very confused. "What do you mean?"

Trance blinked, still not getting the connection. "And...?"

"Oh, you know, just for us human types, of the non-purple variety, getting old is generally considered bad."

"Mmm, well, by your reckoning, I'm either three years old or several million. Take your pick."

"Yeah, but you look like you're twenty," said Claude, "and if you haven't learned that about humans by now, you should have - it's all about the looks."

"So? You made my point. I'm not human. Why should you judge me based on human standards?" She leaned forward and placed a hand on his shoulder. "The only difference I see between then and now is that you smiled more back then. You should keep doing that."
