Pevensie/Snow wedding

Aug 25, 2007 09:28

There could not have been a better day for the wedding had they been able to order it custom-made. The weather was fair and warm, but not too warm, and the late morning sun filtered through the leaves of the trees in the little grove where the heart tree stood. Some benches had been set up near the great white tree for the assembled friends and ( Read more... )

Sansa knew it was being a very poor date to ask Caspian to hold Eddara for the ceremony and she worried dreadfully that Eddara might cry. He would have to step away and miss it and if anyone should have to do that it was her. But she couldn't because she was to attend Susan. Caspian had appeared almost amused at her worries and reassured her at once. He told her he was quite certain Eddara would behave wonderfully (he did not look as confident as he sounded there,) but then he made her smile with an octopus hand puppet. Sansa relaxed on that front, handed Eddara to him and settled her daughter in his arms, she kissed Eddara and then Caspian, before directing her concerns where they should be today, on
Susan.

It was almost strange to hear any component of Westerosi wedding vows at such a happy wedding for Sansa had almost began to associate them with foreshadowing of ill luck, but she had never attended any wedding in Westeros with such a well matched pair as Susan and Jon.

After the ceremony, where Sansa had only cried a tiny bit and they were surely happy tears and her eyes were quite dry when she finally found Susan not conversing with anyone to pull her into a hug. "You look beautiful, goodsister," she said giddy at being able to call Susan that at last and not caring if her previous statement was a tiny bit boastful under the circumstance. Mainly because it was more than the dress, Susan looked quite lit up with happiness. "That was the most lovely wedding I've ever attended," Sansa told her solemnly but she could not be solemn for long and she could not help but smile brightly at Susan as if unable to believe the day was here at last.

"And a great deal of it was thanks to you," said Susan, hugging Sansa tightly. She would not have been able to put it together without Sansa's help, she was certain of that. "With your help with the dress and the cloaks and everything else - thank you so much." Letting go of Sansa, she smiled brightly and said, "Not only did I get a husband today but more family as well, especially a sister." Sansa had long been like a sister to her anyway, but now it was official.

Sansa felt a tiny bit smug,
a sister, not several. "Oh I was glad to do it and you know it," she said. "It was worth all of it to see you standing there in it and Jon's reaction." And it would be even better that Susan was so much closer now in her and Jon's new home. "Have you had anything to eat," she prompted, because there was lots of lovely food and Sansa did not think she'd seen Susan do anything but smile. Not that this was not completely understandable.

"Oh, no, not yet," said Susan, not realising until just then that she was actually hungry. She'd had a bit of fruit that morning but that was all. "My stomach has been in knots all morning from nerves, I could hardly eat a bite. I thought if I did I might be sick right off."

"Well you must have something proper," said Sansa, who'd suspected this was the case. "Else you shan't be able to have any of your splendid cake with it being too rich for you and I am sure it is luck to have lots of it." She steered Susan carefully in the direction of the food. It was only through strict self control that Sansa stopped herself putting a plate together for Susan.

Once faced with a tableful of food Susan realised she was hungrier than she thought, but she didn't quite pile her plate as she wanted to as she was still a bit too keyed up from everything to trust her stomach to behave. It was all very good, and Susan made a note to thank Eostre; she didn't know her very well except from working in the kitchen together, and it was so nice of her to go to all the trouble. "You should have something, too," Susan told her, "while you've got your hands free. Where is Eddara, by the way? With your mother?"

Sansa helped herself to odd bits of food but she hadn't had any problem eating that morning and she was definitely leaving room for the cake. "That's a point," she said though she had mastered eating one handed she could not do that and hold a plate. "Oh no," she said smiling, she'd been going to ask Mother but she wasn't really sure how Mother felt about Jon's wedding. Not that she would say that to Susan. "She's with Caspian," she confided, "he's getting ever so good with her. I won't leave them too long though, I just had to say congratulations." She smiled, "and make sure you got something to eat, I am your attendant after all."

"He's getting good with her, hm?" Susan asked with a knowing look, in between bites. "That's a good sign, I think." She eyed her bouquet, lying on a table nearby and thought that she needed to make sure Sansa was the one to catch it, if possible.

"Yes," said Sansa her cheeks slightly pink, "well he gets quite a bit of practise." There would be hardly anytime Sansa could spend with him at all if she did not bring Eddara and Caspian never seemed to expect her not too. Sometimes thankfully Eddara would sleep peacefully through quite a bit of their time together. Her gaze followed Susan and she looked quite hopeful for a moment. Then felt silly, she knew full well she was an awful catch.

"Don't worry," Susan told her in a conspiritorial whisper, noting where Sansa looked, "I'm an excellent shot, remember?" She wasn't used to aiming behind her, of course, but she was confident all the same. She had a bit more to eat, and half a cup of wine, and then thought if she ate anymore she would be ill (she was still far too giddy to settle down) and that would not bode well for the rest of the evening.

Sansa had not thought of it like that and it was fortunate or any old someone could catch it. Likely Arya, except she wouldn't want to and it was then it would never come true. Sansa would just die if Arya was married before her but thankfully Arya still hated the very idea. She watched as Susan managed a bare half cup of wine and smiled, "eager to go find your lord husband?" she teased.

"A bit," Susan admitted, blushing. "It feels so strange to call him my husband, yet I want to go about introducing myself to everyone as 'Susan Snow', just because." She liked the way that sounded - Susan Snow - and said it again in her head just because she wanted to.

"You shall have to meet as many new people as you can in future," said Sansa at once with a smile but she could not resist teasing. "Though if you feel the need to introduce yourself repeatedly today people might feel the heat and the excitement have gotten to you and make you sit down."

Susan laughed. "Perhaps they have gotten to me," she said, "for I feel quite giddy and a little silly. Or perhaps it's just that I'm so happy."

"Exactly as it should be," said Sansa knowingly. "Perhaps I should sit you down or you shall be too giddy to dance and you've finally got Jon to admit he can."

"Oh, no," said Susan. "I don't think I can sit still for a minute. I'm too excited." She felt like a glass of champagne, full of little bubbles that kept bursting to the top. "If I float away from giddiness, you must pull me back down to earth. I don't want to miss anything."
