Jon had once picked up a book from the shelf whose opening line had been "It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened." That was rather how he felt right now, if the truth must be told; it was two days til his wedding, and he was beginning to be frightened. It was a nerve-wracking thing, though he could not quite put his finger ( Read more... )

"Ah," Robb says, watching him for a moment before approaching, "you've escaped as well, have you? I'm not sure, but I don't think you're supposed to be hiding from the preparations for your own wedding."

"No?" Jon said, turning with a grin and lowering the stick he'd been about to throw. "I think it's fairly common." A beat, then he wrinkled his nose and added, "And I'm not hiding. I'm... taking some time to myself." Which was essentially the same thing, as he well knew.

"Hiding," Robb corrects, "because it's bloody chaos back there half the time, and I can't say that I blame you."

"Alright then, hide with me," Jon returned with a grin. "I was hardly hiding from you, anyway. Moreso from everyone all together." He was glad Robb had come, for truly, he did not really want to be alone any more than he wanted to be in the midst of a dozen chattering people.

Though still quite small compared to Ghost, Ylaena had grown into a relatively formidable-looking direwolf. Anyone else would have found her steady loping gait to be a rather unnerving sight. It did not help that she immediately loped after one of the thrown sticks while her human took a fair amount of time to wander out from the treeline.

"I know what it is you are doing," Lyanna called out with a healthy amount of knowing glee all things considered.

"That doesn't surprise me," Jon called back, grinning. "You usually do." Wresting the stick from Ylaena's considerable grip, he tossed it again, and watched the two wolves tangle for possession of it. His mother drew close, and Jon's smile turned sheepish. He knew she did not claim to know his mind without good reason, and was a little embarrassed to be caught out.

Lyanna's smile remained comforting, even while her eyes glinted with faint, teasing mischief. When close enough she lifted a hand and caught the side of his face within the cradle of her palm, the tips of her fingers dipping into his hair.

"It is good to have your time alone, but even better to have my company," she pinched him playfully only because she could. "And when I leave I will tell the lot of them that you are most certainly nowhere near the beach."

"Thank you," he said gratefully, looping his arm easily around her shoulders and kissing the top of her head. "Your company is hardly what I was avoiding, anyway... not that it was anyone in particular," he added with a little smile, "as much as everyone all together. It is rather mad back there." It seemed everyone in the family was up to something, and it all had to do with his wedding. Being the center of attention was never something Jon had enjoyed overmuch.

"How come he always brings them back?" Arya said, crossing her arms and attempting a stern look at Nymeria, who was bounding over to join her fellow wolf. "She always just goes and gets them and then I have to chase after her to get them back."

Jon laughed. "I imagine she wants you both to do equal shares of the work," he said. "Ghost just knows if he runs away from me after he gets the stick he's going to have to come farther back when he decides he wants me to throw it again." He watched the wolves frolicking near the shoreline with a smile, then turned back to her. "Have you been sent to get me, or has my escape still gone unnoticed?"

"They still haven't noticed," Arya said, with a glance over her shoulder. "I don't think they'd have picked me if dragging you back was what they had in mind."

"Well, you could always force me to go back at knifepoint," he suggested with a chuckle. "Though I can hardly imagine what they'd have to offer you to get you to do it... A reprieve from the dress for Saturday, perhaps?" he said, his eyebrows waggling, a laugh barely suppressed.
