Lucy had always been an explorer. She'd been called a tomboy by a visiting prince once, and while Lucy had laughed, in some ways it was true. She'd rather be out doing things then at home being a proper young girl. Really, if she was a young girl, then how could she not be proper? It was another one of things she was sure couldn't be right ( Read more... )

It seemed like the island was determined to inflict children on him wherever he went. People having babies left and right, the bookshelf giving him children's books, and now a little girl making far too much noise on the trampoline. It was probably his own fault for settling down to read nearby, but he didn't feel like moving.

"Keep it down to a dull roar, would you?" he said irritably, looking up from a Jane Austen book the bookshelf had finally seen fit to give him.

Lucy wanted to pretend that she had taken no notice of the rahter grumpy seeming man, but she couldn't, it would be rude. Just because he was rude to her...

She continued to jump, trying to not make as much noise. As much noise though. No ten year old on a trampoline could be completely quiet.

It was still too much noise for him to concentrate, so he finally set the book aside with a huff of annoyance, and lit a cigarette. "Is that fun, then?" he asked, bored enough to be making conversation with a ten-year-old.

"It is," she said back to him with a smile, taking smaller jumps til she almost came to a rest in the centre. "Would you like to try?"

"Nah," Johnny said. He'd had enough of sacrificing his dignity (such as it was) in order to re-create a childhood he'd never had. He was still proud of that sandcastle, though.

"What's your name, then?" he asked.

"Lucy," she sat at the edge of the trampoline, her legs dangling off it, "Lucy Pevensie. What's yours?"

Johnny blinked. That Klaus kid had told him there were fictional characters here, but he hadn't actually met one yet. Unless she was just messing about. Kids did that, in his (admittedly limited) experience.

"I'm Johnny. Just got here from Narnia, then?" he asked, a bit dubiously.

"You've read about us too?" She leaned forward, eager to know someone else who had read the stories that had been written about their lives, even if this man wasn't very much like Mister Belize. "i came from England. We'd just gotten back from Narnia though."

She had to be messing about. He couldn't believe there were really fictional characters here. This place was weird, but not that weird. Still, he might as well humor her. Why not?

"What were you doing there, then?" he asked, curious as to what book in the series she was pretending to have emerged from.

"We'd just come back from the Land at the End of World. Aslan had sent Eustace, Edmund and I home, and Caspian was going to journey back to Narnia."
