It simply could not be put off any longer. While Anne could and had been altering the clothing she already owned, the fact was that there were only so many seams she could let out before there wasn't any fabric left to accommodate her. Two weeks ago she had only been showing if you knew her intimately enough and knew precisely what to look for. ( Read more... )

Tosh had been thinking similar thoughts to Anne. She was still at the stage that the differences could only be seen if she was naked, or perhaps when swimming, but she knew that she would need new clothes soon.

The thing that Anne was holding up though made her blanch, "What IS that thing?"

"I haven't any idea," said Anne, shoving it back down into the depths of the clothing box, "and I'm not at all sure that I want to. Perhaps it was a failed attempt at a tent."

"Possibly." Whatever it was, Tosh was glad to see it gone. "Is it alright if I join you in trying to make this thing work?"

"Oh, of course," said Anne, sitting down cross legged on the floor and reaching into the box blindly. It couldn't, after all, be any worse than what she pulled out while she was looking. "I intend to remain right her until I manage to retrieve what I need."

Tosh settled in beside her, curious about what the chest would give Anne next. "You could be here for some time then. It tends to be obstinate when you really need something."

"I feel that it ought to feel some small sort of parental obligation towards this child," said Anne stubbornly, "and thus at some point begin to give me what I need."

"Maternity clothes?" She asked with a smile, reaching in herself and pulling out something lurex, slinky and backless that she never would have worn before she was pregnant. "Oh no, definitely not."

"Or something that can be readily turned into maternity clothing," said Anne, eyeing the latest offering from the box. "Which that certainly cannot."

"No it isn't, is it?" Tosh threw it back in the box with a shake of her head. "Well, maybe if we both will it to give us matrnity clothes it'll work?" It was a longshot, but you never knew.

"I would settle for fabrics I thought I could bear to be seen in," said Anne. "I really don't think that's too much to ask at all."

"True. I don't really need anything quite yet, I just thought it would be a good idea to start seeing if I can make the box cooperate earlier rather then later." Tosh dug around a bit more, pulling our a pale pink empire waisted dress. With orange lace all over it. "Maybe the lace could be picked off?" She really didn't know, she wasn't much of a sewer.

"Oh yes, the lace could certainly be removed," said Anne consideringly. It would be time-consuming, but possible. "I wish I'd taken the time to find new clothes sooner, but I've just been so terribly busy."

"You can have it if you'd like," Tosh held the dress out to Anne, "This was more a surveying expedition for me. I spend so much time in the lab anyway, coming down here, it shouldn't be a problem."

"Thank you," said Anne with genuine gratitude. She was certain she could work on it in the evening at home, perhaps in front of the fire. "I suspect that some days are better than others sometimes. Perhaps the island has moods just as we do, and its choices aren't always entirely due to us."

"I suspect it's true. Some days I can come down here and find whatever I ned, on others..." Well, the sequined tube top she pulled out showed what happened on other days.

"It seems," said Anne, staring at the top in faint horror, "that the island is having a particularly bad day."
