There's something about airplanes, Bee thought, as she peered out her tiny window at the world of pillowed clouds beneath the plane.  When you took a trip on a plane, you started in one place, complete with all its sights and sounds and smells, and then you got onto the plane, and in no time at all you were in an entirely new world - a world of ( Read more... )

Chase had been soaking wet, prying on his rugby shirt and the ball that went with it when he caught sight of the new person on the beach. A flick of hair off his forehead and he debated just walking away, but wandered closer anyway. "Hey," he greeted. "Lost?"

Bee saw him coming, and wondered how he would react to her sudden presence. As he got closer she sort of recognized him. He looked like that guy from the show that Tibby sometimes watched, the one with the cranky older doctor and the team of attractive younger doctors.

She waited a minute before answering him, contemplating her new and confusing surroundings. She looked back to him. "I guess you could say that, since I don't have much of a clue where I am."

Chase studied her carefully, setting the ball near a rock where he'd be able to find it before extending a dry hand. "I'm Rob," he introduced himself. "Rob Chase. You uh, just showed then?"

Obviously, given her talent at suddenly appearing.

Bee shook his hand a bit warily. "Yeah, I just showed up here. I was on a plane with my friends, and I fell asleep, and..."

She trailed off weakly, realizing that her sudden disappearance from the plane would worry her friends horribly.

Chase was almost worried for her, except that by now, he knew better. "If it's any consolation, it sounds like most people's lives continue on while we're here. Sort of like...I dunno, Sliding Doors?"

Bee made a face, realizing that she wasn't really worried about herself. "What... what about people back home?"

"They don't really notice you're gone," he admitted. "Because they think you're still there or something. I mean, this is what I've heard."

Bee winced a little. She thought of her friends, and imagined some copy of herself with them, living her life for her, being her while she was here. She felt outrageously jealous.

"I guess that's good. I wouldn't want them to worry." She could tell she didn't really mean the words, even as she spoke them.

"Maybe they'll turn up?" He sucked at this whole giving-hope thing, but he could do his best, he supposed. "I mean, people from my home turned up."

Bee's heart rose at that. The thought of her and Lena and Tibby and Carmen in a place where they could all be together, every day, for maybe even years cheered her considerably.

"Maybe," she said, smiling a little at him. "I'm Bee, by the way."

"Bee," he echoed, with a bit of a grin. "Very concise, don't think I'll forget that, really." He offered his hand to shake.
