The last time Stu'd been this big, he hadn't had a care in the world. His daddy was fine and fit, his brothers were both alive and mama held everything together with biscuits and gravy. His daddy had been a dentist way back when, and they hadn't been rich, but they'd been closer than Stu'd ever come near again in his life.
He didn't seem to have much of an attention span, and Janie, God bless her, was lovin' him up somethin' fierce, but a man-a boy-he had business to do. Serious business.
Right now he was near the waterfall looking for a frog. It'd go good with the rope, the knife, the rocks and the fish hook he had in there already. If his mama was here, she'd ask him if he was gonna rustle up a dead rat and a string to swing it with, and the thought of that made him grin. There wasn't a single thought of work on his mind, not a thought about his upcoming family or how good it'd be if he'd get one project or another done. It'd been nigh on thirty years since he'd just gotten to play.
So play had just become the most serious business in the whole wide world.
