Mal'd taken down the notice 'bout the meetin' earlier that morning, when he'd actually got it in hisself t' go up t' the compound n' fetch some breakfast for him n' the crew. The mindset had been that it'd more'n likely be tastier than the...food...Kaylee'd try t' concoct in their kitchen. Girl was a gorram genius when it came t' engine-fixin' ( Read more... )

River was still very subdued and withdrawn, and not much in a mood for socializing. But Mal had been planning for this meeting since before Simon and Wash had disappeared (After was not something she was ready to contemplate in much detail.) and it was important to him, so she wouldn't have missed it for anything. She sat quietly in the sand, leaning back against the ship that comforted her just with its presence. "Ain't goin' nowhere, myself," she murmured, knowing Serenity already knew that, if a ship could be said to know things.

Simon hadn't ever loved Serenity like River did, and she thought maybe Wash had just loved Zoe more. For herself, River loved Mal and the ship a was part of him, and she had no reason to ever leave either of them. The island would have a hell of a fight on its metaphorical hands if it ever tried to get rid of her, she had decided. Didn't seem like today was that day, however.

Today was a day to bring people together, people who had a love of the black in common. She knew she ought to try to help, to talk to people more and show off at least the outside of the island's only spaceship to those who might be missing their own. She just couldn't quite bring herself to do it, to talk and smile and be pleasant; she just didn't have it in her to act so falsely, when she was still so sad.
