Unless it has to do with working on his truck or carrying a football from one side of the field to the other, Tim is not cut out for manual labor. So, this business with actually having to help build his own hut is not something he's doing well with. The guys in charge are pretty easy going and they do good work (as far as he can tell anyway), ( Read more... )

Jack knows that Tim's getting himself a hut built, but he's not on the team, so he hasn't been helping out and he actually doesn't even have any idea where the hut's going to be. But he does know about it, so he figures that means Tim's settling in okay.

"Hey," he says when he comes into the rec room and sees him sprawled on the couch. He looks like Jack did his first couple of days on the crew, so he figures the team has roped him into helping out. "You smell kinda funny."

Tim's eyes open at the voice and he turns his head to the side, just enough to make sure that the words are actually being directed at him.

He recognizes Jack from his first day on the Island and gives a slow smile, along with a quiet sort of laugh. "Yeah," he says, lifting one weary arm off the back of the couch. "That would be good ol' blood, sweat and tears, man."

"They're making you work, huh?" Jack asks, sliding down onto the couch across from Tim and giving a soft sigh. He's spent all day working on the barn and his muscles are aching and sore. Actually, if he thinks about it, he probably sort of smells funny, too.

"Yep," Tim answers, shifting a little to make room for Tim, his muscles groaning. "Didn't realize that was in the deal, but hey. Guess I gotta do it."

He notices that Jack looks a little worn and his head tilts a little. "What about you? What you been up to, man?"

"Work and the play," Jack tells Tim, stretching a little as he fights off a yawn, then flashes another grin. "The team I'm on is working on the barn, so it's a hell of a lot of work. And I've still got rehearsals."

"Ah, you're an actor," Tim says with a slow nod. Like that makes sense somehow, like it explains something. "When is that, anyway? The play."

Jack nods, although he's not sure what to make of Tim's tone, but it doesn't really matter. "Yeah, I did movies back home and now the plays here. And it's soon. Um... the first weekend of July."

Tim seems to think that over a minute and in about three seconds, he decides he'll probably go. What the hell else is there to do anyway.

"You got a big part?" he asks. Not that he'd really know if Jack lied to him. He's never read any Shakespeare and doesn't really plan to.

"Pretty big, yeah," Jack says with a nod, rubbing his chin and then stretching again, relaxing on the couch. Which he still can't quite believe he's gotten twice now, but apparently that's part of being in a company.

"You settling in okay?" he asks, changing the subject for no real reason.

"Guess so," Tim answers with a shrug. "I mean, don't really have a choice here, do I? Nowhere to run off to or anything."

"You could go crazy and sit on the beach and refuse to eat or sleep until you die," Jack points out with a bit of a shrug and a smile. "I mean, if you think about it, there are other options."

"Who's to say I haven't gone crazy?" Tim asks with a slow sort of grin before he reaches his hand up, pushing the hair away from his face. "I mean, this place is fucking crazy, isn't it? Maybe I'm just imagining it all."

"Pretty elaborate hallucination, don't you think?" Jack asks, cracking a wider grin at that. "When I first got here I thought I'd gone crazy. I kept going back to the games closet and trying to find my way home."

Tim turns his head to look over at the closet, eyebrow raised.

"Why the games closet?" he asks almost carefully, like Jack will reveal some big secret that he's missed somehow.

"I came through there," Jack explains. "I went into the bathroom at the airport and when I tried to open the door to go back out I came out of the closet and into the hall."

"Ohh," Tim says, but it's hardly a sound at all, just a shape his mouth makes as he thinks back to the trampoline and Texas Stadium. Somehow, he doubts that the trampoline is some kind of portal, though. "And how long have you been here again?"
