Never Thought I Could Lose it All....

Jun 18, 2007 10:08

It had been over a month since Nathan had wound up in this crazy, mixed up place. The Election had come and gone, and he'd missed it. Nevermind the fact that the calender here seemed to indicate it was about Six Months into the future anyway. And while that thought weighed heavily on his mind for a while, it slowly receded in the wake of other, ( Read more... )

Claire spotted him on the path, Mr. Muggles riding along in a super cute bag she'd found in the clothes box. It was way retro. She looked as put together as always, and had her hair tied back in a ponytail.

"Hi!" she chirped, waving at him. The fluffy pomeranian yipped at the stranger, but he didn't launch himself out of the bag. Nathan looked...well, not bad. But not as good as usual. Of course, it seemed like all the grown ups let themselves go. Pretty soon he'd probably be in board shorts and an old gym shirt.

Nathan turned at the voice, and when his eyes landed on Claire, he almost smiled. "Hello," he said, and then looked down at the yipping animal with his eyebrows drawn together. "Cute dog," he said, with just a hint of sarcasm. "Didn't know there were dogs around here."

"There's tons. This is Mr. Muggles. He's my mom's," Claire said, laying her hand on her hip. She could hear the tone in his voice...she owned that tone. "What happened to you?"

Nathan raised an eyebrow briefly, and then smiled just a bit more. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said, and then pushed onto a different subject. "Your mom's, huh? You on dog-sitting duty or something?" he could only assume that if the dog belonged to her mom, that said 'mom' was also here.

Eden was on her way down the path herself when she caught sight of a familiar face. She would have been hard pressed not to recognize him, though it took her a few seconds to put a name to him.

Stopping on the path, she tilted her head and looked him over, curious. Not what he'd been in the posters at all. "Hey," she said, a small smile forming. "You're Nathan Petrelli, aren't you? I lived in New York." You couldn't walk down a street in Brooklyn without catching sight of him around some corner. The discovery that he also happened to be Claire's biological father hadn't hurt for making him someone to remember either.

Nathan made eye contact with the young woman, and nodded ever so slightly. "The very same," he said, with a hint of a smile. He couldn't help slipping just a bit into his old campaign personality. He expected people to know him. Or at least, know his face, his name. The island had been jarring, in that sense. "Where abouts in New York?" he asked. Polite conversation was always important.

"Brooklyn." Eden's posture straightened, head lifting, her own girlish smile growing. There was something nice about a familiar face, even if it brought back memories of home. She couldn't help thinking of Mohinder and how he'd tried to talk to Petrelli, how the man had just moved on and got in his car. He'd felt so awful after that. "You might even know it. I met your brother once, visiting a neighbor of mine. Mohinder Suresh?"

Just to say his name, just to hear him mentioned, just to shake that campaign smile. There was no need for Petrelli to know, though, who she worked for or what exactly she knew.

Nathan paused, and then nodded. "The geneticist. Yes, I knew him... Not well, mind you, but... our paths crossed a few times," he replied with a subtle smile.

Maureen was out running. Not the sort of enjoyable, meditative run that seemed to be popular around here, but the sort of run that she felt obligated to do since half the time the only thing that looked appetizing in the kitchen was some sort of pastry. Especially since someone on the island had apparently discovered the magic of sweet tea. And Maureen sure didn't mind a run every once in a while if it meant she could drink it and not lose her figure ( ... )

Nathan stumbled, instinctively grasping onto the woman's shoulders. Once they'd both steadied himself, he offer her a smile. "That's alright. No harm done," he said, even as he gently pushed her back. "Where were you off to in such a hurry? There a fire somewhere?" he joked.

"Don't you ever just run for the fun of it?" Maureen asked lightly. "Though I probably shouldn't let the scenery distract me so much or I might wind up off course."

"Not often, no." In fact, Nathan had trouble recalling the last time he'd gone out for a run. Probably sometime back in college.

"But I have to agree with you..." he began, looking around. "As inconvenient a place as this is to be, it's got some beautiful scenery."

Bennet found a familiar man and was only glad he had a concealed weapon under the suit that caused him to swelter uncomfortably. He eyed him warily, before approaching. "Nathan Petrelli?" he asked, evenly.

Nathan hadn't been paying much attention to the people around him. But, when someone calls your name, it's instinctive to look up. "The same. Can I help--"

And then he stopped short. His eyebrows drew together, and his mouth stretched into a tight line. "You."

That got a slightly content air out of Bennet and his shoulders rolled back (the injured one still aching). "I see you remember me," he noted, wryly. "Our last meeting was somewhat unfortunate, I'm afraid."

"Unfortunate my ass," Nathan spat, advancing on Bennet. "You and your friend dragged me from my hotel room! I don't know what you were trying to do, but nothing that involves dragging a man half naked from a public establishment at the crack of dawn can be anything honorable."
