River and Simon Chicago were walking back to Serenity, when the dog suddenly broke away, hot in pursuit of what looked like a bird with a piece of paper.
"Simon, no!" ordered River. She figured that a bird carrying something ought not be hunted just then.
Her puppy stopped, but clearly it was difficult for him to hold back, as he trembled with eagerness to actually catch something.
"You trained 'im, I'm sure he'll be good," said Becky, with real trust. She pushed her hands into the the pockets of her dress and watched the dog go, with a little smile.
Dennys had been sitting on the beach doing his own reading when the girl's shout distracted him. He lifted his head and soon saw the problem.
There were plenty of farm animals in the area around the Murry home back in New Hampshire. They'd never actually raised any of their own -- well, other than Fortinbras and maybe the twins themselves -- but Dennys had helped a friend corner some geese once. As he got up and ran to head off the bird, he somehow thought this wouldn't be quite so easy.
"Whoa, okay," he said, arms out as he tried to do something close to herd the bird.
For once, there was a nice helpful person around when she needed one. It was kinda neat, if a little strange. Not that this place wasn't strangely populated by people who appeared to really care for others.
She smothered her giggle, and jogged up behind the guy. "You know a lot about this kinda thing?"
"Um, no," Dennys admitted. The bird had at least stopped though, with a mad flutter of wings to slow itself, and was blinking blankly at them, standing its ground. "But I'm pretty quick?" he added, watching the bird carefully and trying to figure out what to do.

The bird stopped and looked at them, daring someone to do something.

"He should just catch it and bring it here, but we haven't tried it on a real animal yet," she said to Becky, only a little bit nervous for the bird.
