There were some people who would have found being offered a chance to be a part of an island council to be a rather nice gesture on somebody's part. Bond's reaction was to scrutinize the hand-writting of both people who recomended him before retiring to his cave for a bottle and a half of moonshine ( Read more... )

Although she suspected he'd be able to figure it out on his own, Jill decided not to mention that she'd been the one who'd nominated James for the Council. It seemed absurd enough that she'd been nominated, so there was no reason why he shouldn't be as well.

"I've joined you in the land of fictional characters," she announced as she approached him on the beach, giving him a half-smile. That was still a bizarre thing to say, but she figured she might as well get used to it.

James raised an eyebrow before returning the smile with a small one of his own. He had his suspicions about the handwriting but the only way to really confirm that would have been to convince Jill to write something out for him. There was hardly a subtle way to do so on an island with a limited supply of paper.

"Welcome to the herd," he murmured wryly.

"It's strange," Jill said, wandering closer and looking at James, her smile growing just a little. He looked like he was sulking. Oddly enough, the last time she'd seen him look like that, he'd been a woman. "Are you okay?"

"I assure you that I'm fine," James muttered. He wondered why it was that when people got to know you they always seemed to notice when you were expressing some sort of emotion? "Anyway, how have you been?"

"Strange," Jill answered honestly, sitting down in the sand and stretching her legs out. "Very, very strange. I was nominated for the Council, which is strange enough in itself and then there's the fact that I'm from a television show."

"I did as well," James said, shaking his head. He eyed the water briefly spreading out his towel and joining her. "How did you find out about being on a television program?"

"I was taking a break and the episode was titled Lethargica," Jill explained, looking over at James with a soft smile. "I'd been infected with lethargica back home, so I thought it might be... I don't know what I thought. I had to watch it, though."

James frowned for while he was fairly certain that wasn't a real disease, he did not like the thought of Jill being sick. "And in the end?"

"In the end I was a coma and I got to watch David tell me that... that I'm everything he needs, that if I just got better, he'd never bother me about being together again," she said, her smile disappearing slightly at that. Lethargica was easier to talk about. "But at least I gained an insight into encephalitis lethargica. I bet they could have used that during the outbreak of 1917."

Ah, David again. James was relieved when she returned to discussing the disease. Having never met David, he still had nothing to say about the man that was particularly worth saying or useful to someone who actually knew David. "Well, I, for one, am pleased you do not have encephalitis lethargica at this very moment."

With a laugh, Jill nodded and said, "As am I. Over five million people died from related causes between 1917 and 1928. It's called the sleeping sickness, although it essentially renders most people living statues."

Bond nodded firmly. That would have been a very horrible way to spend the remainder of one's days. Particularly if one had a great many days left. "Do your friends from home know that they are fictional?"

"David does," she said quietly. "He caught me watching and we... well, he caught me watching him, so we sort of had to talk about it. But I don't think we're going to tell Bob or Mayko. Not yet, anyway. I don't know if Bob would be able to handle it."

"Some people react poorly to such things," Bond agreed. He might have disliked being fictional but he did not think brooding over such a matter was likely to change anything at all.

"Bob's different, too," she explained. "I'm not sure how much I've told you about him, but he has an exceptionally difficult time with change. The island itself is more than enough for him and I just keep hoping he doesn't wake up as a woman one day."

"I'm fairly certain that only happens once a year," Bond observed calmly. "So at least you don't have to worry about that until next April."
