After over a month spent in various pockets, it was some kind of feat that the the loop of twisted, green vine wasn't just a unidentifiable mess of loose green stringy... pieces. Somehow, Chris'd had enough presence of mind to never accidentally put it through the washing machine, which easily would've ended its sad life. Initially, he hadn't even been sure why he'd kept the thing. After all, it didn't really symbolize anything anymore except his incredible ability to fuck things up just when they were going well.
But, he had kept it. And it'd taken him awhile to figure out just exactly why, but he had figured it out. Eventually.
And he was sure now. He was. His talk with Kara had pretty much cemented it, but it wasn't just that, he didn't think. It wasn't out of fear of losing Lennox to the dinosaurs or to the Island's sick sense of humor or to someone. It couldn't be because he thought it would fix things either or because he felt he had to. Nobody could ever accuse Chris of being a quick learner when it came to life mistakes, but he'd learned from Julie at least.
Or at least he wanted to think so.
Sucking in a slow breath, Chris held the vine ring in his palm, his fingers folding over it tightly as he squinted out across the water of the ocean. He didn't know how long he'd been sitting there -- long enough for his ass to start going numb -- but it was still and quiet and after a long day spent building, he needed the downtime to just think.
Not that he hadn't been doing that a lot already.
Maybe he'd been doing too much thinking, actually. But, This time had to be different than the last. This time he was going to make a promise and keep it and not run away if Lennox was actually insane enough to say yes.
Someone had mentioned there was a blacksmith on the island, a girl named Kate that Chris hadn't met yet so far as he could remember. Fairly new, he figured. So, his first step was finding her and asking if she'd have time to make him some rings. Nothing fancy, just a simple band, and maybe he could build something for her in return since that's all he really had to offer.
But, maybe asking for the rings before Lennox had actually said yes was being to presumptuous. Maybe he should hold off on that part so he didn't risk wasting her time. Because, of course, Lennox could say no and it wouldn't matter anymore. Nothing would matter anymore.
... Fuck, what was he doing?
