Who are the people in your neighborhood...

Crowley had grown weary of reading the books he'd gotten to take to Aziraphale in the clinic, so he sauntered into the rec room to do battle with the bookshelf. He had always believed that Good and Evil were just names of sides, but that was until he'd encountered the shelf and the jukebox. Leave it to Knowledge and Electronics to prove to him ( Read more... )

It was a sort of restlessness that led him to the rec room - and he was very surprised at the amount of people there. He couldn't recall ever seeing that many at once. A minor conference. If they had been talking to each other. Which they weren't.

On the off-chance that something might appear, he drifted over to the bookshelf. Perhaps he could swap one of the people there for books, like he'd done with that girl. George? Anyway, worth the try.

"If you get it to give up anything that isn't the bloody Bible, I'll take it," Crowley said, glowering at the shelf. Well, glowering was the best description, even though his dark sunglasses concealed his eyes.

He gave the guy (who looked a lot like Johnny Depp but not in the pirate version) a weird kind of look, wondering who the fuck got the Bible each time... "Haven't had that one yet," he said, "so let's see. No need to swap, though, I think I prefer not to. Being raised catholic is quite enough."

True to habit, the closed his eyes when he tried that shelf. It at least provided as much of a surprise as one could get here. When he looked he had Mario Puzo's The Godfather in one hand and the fucking text-book from the Massachusetts State Police Academy. He sighed. "The fucking thing will never learn that I'm not Italian. But if you like it, it's yours." He didn't expect anyone to enjoy a textbook about code of conduct in law enforcement.

Crowley turned up his nose at another book of rules and snatched the novel. "Saw this in the theatre, when it came out," he mentioned, nodding to the man. That was all the thanks he offered before thumbing through it quickly to make sure it wasn't one that had great whopping passages blacked out, or pages missing.

Billy just took that to mean that this guy was from a few years into his own past. "Yeah? I kinda liked it when I first saw it. In a way I still do, but since I'll likely get another copy soon I wont miss this one." He didn't mind the lack of any formal thank you's - he wasn't in the habit of hearing those anyway.

Crowley nodded once again, holding up the book. "Well, thanks, mate. If you ever start missing Catholic school, I'd be happy to torment you. All about repeaying kindness," he said flatly. It was completely unclear if he was serious or not.

He made a face. "No thanks, I'm fine with shredding my inheritant propensity for guilt-trips." He chose to view this as of dubious seriousness, though he had a feeling this guy knew the Christian faith a bit too well - which would explain the fucking Bibles.
