Simon Tam thought he would turn around to see Wash's body laid out on the examination table in the clinic... but it wasn't there.

Was this another of Jayne's tricks? He looked around the clinic, as if somehow Wash's body had moved and would now be on one of the cabinets... but no such luck.

The doctor sighed and crossed the clinic to the door -- which was open. Why was the door open? He always closed the door. Simon didn't want to risk someone running in on him and disturbing the whole operation. This was hard enough as it was without being interrupted -- Wash had been a friend and, although Simon had operated on many friends before, none of them had ever been corpses. Still, he thought of this as his last duty to his friend, and now that jing-tzahng mei yong-duh [consistently useless] Jayne had gone and--

Simon suddenly noticed something as he opened the door. When had the ship stopped moving? He looked around, confused. "Hello?" he called, realizing also that the usual activity on the ship had ceased as well.

He stepped out into the hallway, placing the pair of dissection scissors that he was holding into the pocket of his medical apron. Where was Wash's body? Why did everything look... different? Had he been dreaming this whole thing? Walking through the corridors of Serenity was an even more surreal experience. Fully convinced now that he was in some bizarre dream -- if he was, maybe it meant that Wash and the Shepherd weren't dead, that none of this horrible adventure with the Reavers had ever happened -- he called out through the corridor, "Anyone here?"

No answer.

Huh. Where were the usual noises? Had they landed?

Eventually, Simon decided to see if he'd just missed something. He exited Serenity, his feet stepping onto sand. This didn't look like any planet he'd ever been on... "Hello?" he called, holding his hand up over his eyes to shield the sun. Where was everyone?
