Emmy hadn't been sleeping very well lately, old enough to know that something was wrong but not quite old enough to know what to do about it, so when Lily finally rocked her to sleep Eddie gave them both a kiss good-bye, grabbed a baggie and a chisel, and headed out to the totem pole. In the dark. He wasn't entirely sure how he was going to get any work done, but it was a place to get out of everybody's hair and maybe actually do something with his hands. Things were always a little easier when Eddie could work with his hands.
He kept a fire smoldering in a large dirt patch nearby -- easier than finding someone with a lighter to make a new one all the time -- and banked it up a little before doing any work. Or maybe he wouldn't do any work, maybe he'd just smoke up a little by the fire and spend some quality time with himself. It was hard to say at this point. He just knew that Lily and Emmy needed their sleep, and he needed a little time to think.
Or time to not think, as was more likely the case.
