Ocean city girl is smiling.

Veronica Mars had set up at a table in the rec room, bent foreward over a page of her notebook that was, by and large, empty: all white page and blue lines and some black squiggles (and maybe flowers and a heart or two, but whatever) in the margins. The fact remained, she knew nothing about this case beyond what her instincts told her, and they ( Read more... )

"You know, I'm really not sure this is the best place for a nap," she said, slowly making her way over to where Veronica seemed to be camped out. "This music can't be helping much, either."

She made a face as she lowered herself into a chair next to Veronica, then reached over to ruffle her hair.

Veronica wrinkled up her nose at the feel of a hand in her hair, then lifted her head to look at Pam. "'m not napping," she insisted. "I'm just lying here, thinking. Quietly."

Sitting up more fully, she looked from Pam to the jukebox at the sound of a single chord. There was a pause, and then the rhythmic strumming of a guitar and the familiar sound of Jenny Lewis singing "More Adventurous."

"I like this one," she added, shrugging.

She tilted her head slightly, listening intently, then nodded. "Yeah. It's not bad," she agreed, leaning her elbows on the table.

"So, if you weren't napping, what were you thinking about?" she asked, leaning over to bump her shoulder lightly.

Veronica worried her lower lip thoughtfully. "The unchangeable fact that Logan is and always will be kind of an asshole," she said easily. "And, uh..." She rolled her eyes, smiling a little. "Actually. A boy. Who, uh, I might kind of be... dating."

There's a familiar blonde slouching over one of the tables in the rec room, and Gwen takes a detour to plop down across from her with a smile. "Hey," she greets, brows arched. "That bored, are you?"

"Bored?" Veronica echoed, raising her head with a lazy smile. "Nah. Well, yes. A little." That, and seriously reconsidering how much she really wanted to help Logan out these days. "Why, you come over to entertain me?"

"I could try," chuckles Gwen as she perches her chin on a palm. "Not sure how entertaining I am when I'm sober, though," she adds with a grin, and nods to the notebook. "What're you doing, there?"

Veronica bit her lip, glancing away as if mildly embarassed. "Starting a diary," she said, like she was confessing something ridiculous. "Or not. Sometimes writing things down is good, huh? But I don't think I'm cut out for it."

Ask my mother and she'll tell you that I drag my feet like it's my job. Today I couldn't have lifted them any higher if I wanted. My body felt like shit run over twice -- minus the smell since I'd taken an hour long shower to help with the nasty ass hangover.

My damp hair was pulled up high on top of my head and it pretty much looked exactly how my brains felt -- a big scraggly, half-baked pile of spaghetti. Tasty. "Mmrrrrrrr," I moaned at no one in particular. And then I looked up and saw Veronica and said, "Mmrrrrrrr," in hello. One living dead girl coming right up.

Veronica lifted her head from her arms and stared at George, blinking once or twice for good measure. "If the island's started turning people into zombies, I want to go home now," she announced loudly.

Otherwise, she was staying put. Because, Logan and his permasshattery aside, this place kind of just got better and better, even when it got worse. "What happened to you? Not an afternoon person?" She smiled smugly, but there was a flicker of concern behind it, because seriously, George looked about half-dead. And some part of Veronica seemed to have put up the white flag and elected George Lass for confidante, inasmuch Veronica told anyone but Pam anything - maybe because George would react the same way Veronica would have done, or similar, with wry witticisms and raised eyebrows. As much as she appreciated the support she got from Pam and River and all, the snark factor was a serious relief. And god, she missed Mac.

Though I had good reason to blush, my body didn't have the energy for any of that crap. "Mnnmpph," I grunted at her comment and then slumped down in a chair across from her, almost at once letting my cheek meet the smooth surface with a surprisingly gentle thump.

The impact didn't really hurt but I said, "OW," anyway. Mostly because the rest of me was hurting.

She sat up more fully at that, one eyebrow raising as her head tilted to the side. "George?" Veronica snapped out the name, one quick, concerned syllable punctuated with a frown. Memories flickered in the back of her mind, and her eyebrow joined the first, arching high. "So you were at the bonfire, huh?"

She'd had too much on her mind last night to say hi to the other girl, even if - maybe especially because - their last topic of conversation had been particularly apt.
