you turn me into somebody loved

Feb 14, 2007 00:41

In the mornings, Veronica Mars generally got up, had breakfast and set off for whatever work she was supposed to do that day. It rarely managed to be enough to keep her fully occupied, so she wound up finding other little methods of entertainment - too much energy and nowhere to put it. Restlessness set in all too easily these days ( Read more... )

To be honest, Jim was hiding.

After a morning of hugs and talks of another baby and a multitude of other things, he was kind of weirded out. He hoped that maybe he could find solace from it all in the compound, so he headed toward it and his bedroom once he snuck away from Cutter, Lennox, and Pam.

As he opened the door to get in, he nearly smashed into Veronica. who looked like she was heading outside. He shot her an apologetic look. "Sorry, Veronica."

"No," Veronica said, stepping back with a laugh, "it's okay. I was gonna come see you and Pam, actually." She loved them so much sometimes, but it didn't surprise her she'd never told them that. She'd always played things so close to her chest. But when people could disappear any day... It seemed important, suddenly, to at least make it clear.

"Oh?" he asked, closing the compound door behind him. "Pam's...back at the hut. I think there's something...um."

He hesitated. He wasn't quite sure how to explain what was wrong with Pam. He had a feeling saying 'she's being too loving' might come off wrong.

"...Nevermind. Anyway, what's up?"

Veronica's brow knit as she leaned forward, laying a hand on Jim's elbow. "Is she alright? I'm fine, nothing's up. Is Pam okay?" The way he trailed off seemed to indicate that she wasn't, and Veronica could feel the concern rising up with unusal speed.

Keith was Patrolling. Not following people around, turning their dirty business into a living, not tricking information out of Sachs, not trying to convince Lamb to do the right thing; he was patrolling. He was upholding justice, smiting wrongdoers and battling evil.

Well. He would be. Right now he'd take a cat in a tree.

He glanced hopefully into some trees on his way down the path, and stopped when something moved in one. He sighed when he determined that it was, in fact, a kind of parrot, and probably not in need of police assistance.

Veronica nearly bounced toward her father, grinning. "Find any evildoers to undo yet?" she asked, hugging him. Because if a daughter couldn't hug her father for no reason from time to time, then who could?

Keith blinked slightly but hugged her back, trying to figure this one out; she was clearly not upset by anything and yet, random hugging. Which he was okay with, but that's because he was a parent.

There was a favour request coming. Had to be.

"Maybe," he said. "Does that parrot look sinister to you?"

Veronica wrinkled up her nose, tilting her head back to look up at the parrot he'd mentioned. "It does," she affirmed. "He has all the makings of an avarian Hitler. It's in the eyes."

She'd gone so long without him; it felt good just to be around her father now, making stupid jokes and being close. She'd always known he would come for her.

Logan had not eaten any cheese, nor was he likely to at any point during the day. Really, he loved dairy as much as the next person, but his digestive system had a tendency to disagree.

He did, however, like Valentines day. In fact, it was probably the only holiday his family hadn't managed to taint with their fighting and insane parties. And yeah, he had plans and all for himself and Neil, but he had hours before he even had to think about getting everything ready.

He was smiling though, or smirking at least, when he spotted Veronica up the path. Slinging his arm over her shoulder, he offered her one of the wildflowers he'd gathered in hopes if making something that resembled a bouquet.

"Happy Valentines day Veronica," he said as he let go. "Cupid shoot you in the ass yet?"

Veronica raised an eyebrow, wry amusement mingling with appreciation. "My ass is safe from target practice," she assured him, even though she wasn't sure that was strictly true. She didn't need to tell him that. But she was tucking the flower in her hair above her ear as she spoke, shrugging almost coyly.

"I think Cupid's been busy aiming at yours, anyway." She bit her lip, fighting the temptation to give him a hug - just a friendly thing, despite some of the emotions she was struggling to push to the background again.

"Well, I do have a nice ass, I'm sure he couldn't help it," Logan snorted. "Whatever, it's the one day a year where no one looks at you funny for being a hopeless romantic... and it usually ends with getting laid. I firmly embrace it and all it's strange ways."

"You, a romantic?" Veronica asked, but she somehow couldn't work up the required disbelief. He'd done some sweet things in his time; some of them hurt to remember. "I don't know, it... I used to love it, but it stopped mattering when I was, like, sixteen." She scoffed softly, head ducking. "I guess this place changes a lot of things." Some for the better, some for the worse.

Josh saw her heading out, and she seemed a little... melancholy. Emotional, he guessed. And no one should feel like that for Valentine's Day. "Hey blondie." He grinned cockily. "How're you doing???"

Veronica grinned, catching sight of him. "Josh, hey," she said brightly. She'd only spoken to him a couple times, but he was a nice guy and he'd been a friend of Sam's. God, she missed Sam sometimes. "I'm... good." Her brow furrowed a little in surprise at that even as she smiled. "Pretty good. You?"

"Good, actually." He was feeling oddly cheery today. "And how is the island treating you lately?" He smiled softly, leaning against a wall.

"Better than Neptune ever did," she admitted easily. "Everyone I love is here. It couldn't get much better. How about you? I saw... I saw CJ a few weeks ago, and she was... different. CJ, but not the CJ I knew."

There's pretty much no doubt in my mind now that people are acting... weird. I wouldn't be surprised if some version of Cupid turned up and is shooting people with his fucking evil little arrows. You know, if he wasn't here already. You never know on a place with grim reapers, Death and Jane Austen heroines.

But I'm not all that concerned. It seems pretty harmless, whatever it is.

I don't know if bananas are good for dogs, but Max seems to like them. He's bouncing up on his hind legs, begging for the little chunks of fruit I'm tossing to him from my half eaten banana. It's not real thrilling entertainment, but it breaks the monotony of the seemingly endless number of walks to and from the compound I've made since I moved into the hut. This is number 968, I think. Somewhere around there.

"Hi!" Veronica called out, sliding her hands into her pockets as she approached. Awww, Max was so cute. Taser was off terrorizing Lilly, but Veronica wished she'd thought to bring her along. Her dog deserved a playmate. "How're you two doing?"

"Hey, Veronica," I say, nudging Max off my leg and turning toward her voice. "I'm alright. Max is... Max," I say, gesturing to him and arching an eyebrow. That's explanation enough, I think.

Veronica knelt down, lavising affection on the fuzzy dog before looking up to Neil with a grin. "Hey, did you ever get those cookies or did Logan eat 'em all before he got back to you? I need to know if an asskicking is in order."
