island investigation

Ray knew it was a bit of a trek back to the compound from where they were standing, which meant he and Stanley had a bit of a wait ahead of them. Which sucked because Ray felt positively disgusting, soaked in blood and smeared with ash and just generally cranky. There wasn't even really anywhere to sit. He just hoped that Maladicta and Buffy came ( Read more... )

Holy Mary Mother of God, it was about time. Ray had hardly so much as brushed the ash off his clothes, and had never been so glad to see a bunch of people making their way through the woods towards him than he was right at that moment.

The one cop that was covered--COVERED--in blood, looked pissed, and looked as if he wanted to get the hell out as soon as possible. So Sara, stepping carefully, walked over and gave him a little wry smile. "Hi. Sara Sidle, CSI. I'm going to process you for evidence, get your fingerprints and DNA to exclude them from consideration, so we can get you out of here and showered."

"You can actually process DNA?" said Ray dubiously. "Here? Sure, all right, you do what you need to do so I can get outta here before this scene is burned into my brain for the rest of my life." If it wasn't already.

"You never know." Sara merely looked at him, barely blinking. "We can definitely compare by type and cellular structure, at any case. We'll collect what we can get and then work from there, better to have too much than too little, right? And we're going to need your clothes, once you get back inside and get a change."

She prepped fingerprints and DNA swab before taking them and also taking a sample of ash. "Also, I'm going to need to document you visually. Can you tell me what happened?"

Chase had been summoned out and suddenly a dull clinic shift became something way more involved. He'd grabbed his stethoscope and a bag of simple equipment and was off to the place in the woods where he saw something he never thought he'd see on the island.

He went to work quickly, crouching down on his knees to check for vitals and he knew by the touch of his fingers to skin (in order to find a pulse) that resuscitation was out of the question. They were both long dead, long cold.

He sat back, hands covered in blood and his lab coat mildly stained with it. He called out the time of death and wrote it down himself when his mind came back to him and he could stop staring at the mutilated bodies.

"I coulda told you that," muttered Ray, his blood-soaked clothing a sticky and now cold testament to just how he'd found out that Andrej guy was definitely dead.

Chase glanced up at the foreign guy, inspecting the injuries. "Time of death was a while ago from the body temperature," he warned. "You've probably got rigor mortis on your hands, now."

"Aw, Jesus," said Ray, starting to scrub them on his pants. "Do you really have to tell a guy that? And me a mile or two from the nearest shower."

"Hello," said Grissom to the bloody, sooty IPD men. He appeared grave and serious, despite the guilt-lined giddiness within. "Gil Grissom, Las Vegas Crime Lab. Used to be, anyway." He hefted his kit. "I'd shake your hands, but you're evidence."

He glanced around to see who else was present.

"Yeah, it's a pleasure," said Ray, scowling down at his clothing. At least it was crap from the clothing box that he wouldn't be sad to burn once he managed to get out of it. "That guy there killed the other guy, then when we caught the bastard red-handed he stabbed himself. He was probably dead before he even hit the fire."

"I see. I'm going to want to bring my team out here immediately. Once we gather some preliminary information, Dr. Brennan will be wanting the bodies back at the lab. She'll be performing the autopsies."

Grissom flicked on his flashlight, though it wasn't too dark yet.

"Though I realize you're an eyewitness, I believe we're treating this as we would any other crime scene."

"Yeah, you do what you need to do," said Ray with a sigh, "cause I might know with my own eyes that the guy offed himself, but I still don't know what kind of crazy shit went down here before we got here."

Maladicta had found him, and she had been pale - paler than usual - and tense, and he had already been halfway out the door before she had even said a word. At her brief explanation he had only picked up his pace, until he was at half a run by the time he reached what could only be called the crime scene.

The crime scene. He couldn't help the small thrill at the thought.

But then he saw it. He stopped short a brief distance away, froze for a moment. Sam Vimes had seen a lot of things in his career, but this, this was something else.

"Holy gods." Vimes could only stand there for a moment, waiting for his mind to return to normal so work could start.

[out to the grocery store now but will be back shortly!]

Ray was hanging around the outskirts of the scene while Vecchio talked to the scientist guy, and looked over at the sound of Vimes' voice. "Hey, man," he said in greeting, waiting for the other man to take in the scene.

And then the moment was over, and Vimes ran a hand through his hair. He set his jaw and nodded imperceptively. Time to work, whatever work entailed.

He gave Kowalski a grim sort of smile in return. "Evening. Right, the corporal gave me some of the details, but what the hell happened?"

"Well," Ray began, carding a hand through his hair. "Dief, he's uh, the half-wolf, started barking and took off. He lead me and Vecchio here. Faramir was tied to the tree just like he is now. He looked dead already, I mean, there wasn't really a question of that, and this fuckjob here on the ground was just covered with blood. We told him to, y'know, freeze and put his hands up. Maladicta and Buffy showed up, they must have heard Dief. Uh, the guy said some nonsense like he didn't even hear us and just...killed himself. Stabbed himself in the fucking neck." Ray paused to look over at Vimes. "I don't think any of us had been expecting it, sir."

Ray mostly hung around Vecchio and did not look at the bodies while they waited. Once people started showing up he wandered around a little to make sure there wasn't just some random tag-along who'd mess with the crime scene.

Horatio had been in the Compound hall when Dief came bounding up, and one look was all it took to assure Horatio that this was no usual greeting. Sparing no room for dignity, Horatio followed Dief at a run, not realising how tense he had become until he saw Ray, whole and unharmed, on the crest of a hill. Horatio ran over to him, gasping for breath and blind to the mayhem all around them.

Ray grinned a little when Horatio arrived with Dief, but his smile was strained at the edges.

"Hey, I'm glad you came. We got a, uh, situation..." Situation was putting it lightly, but it worked for the moment.

Horatio had gathered that much, but it was not until he looked around that he fully perceived the gravity of the situation. "Dear god," he breathed, turning his face away. He'd never had much stomach for blood, and there was...quite a lot of it.
