Toby was not a covetous person, but he had a bottle of bourbon and anyone who wanted it would have to pry it out of his cold dead hands.

He had poured himself a glass and was stroking the label with a fond expression.

Happy damn New Year.

"Ah! Tobias, old sock!" declared John, who had had much the same notion with a bottle of single malt. "My very best on the new year!"

Toby glanced around, slightly bewildered. He wished Leo was there so they could have had a 'sock?' moment.

"Lord John," he greeted, smiling anyway. "The same to you. Let's get drunk and legislate."

"A venerable tradition," John said cheerfully. "Honored by time and all that. Do you suppose any of this will last if kept?"

I'm somewhat nervous about this, but I am able to be at the gathering and so I choose to attend. I am around early enough that I can leave if it becomes overwhelming. Perhaps waiting until more people are here would be prudent, but I'm in the rec room in time to see it change. I've been here long enough to be only slightly startled.

I've chosen to wear jeans and one of the green shirts today, modern clothes. I do not wish to stand out too much. I just... would like to enjoy being around people again.

He blinks for a second when he sees him, not quite sure he isn't hallucinating. "Faramir?" He starts over to him. "What the hell-- I haven't seen you in ages."

"Yes." It's me, of course.

"I've been in the compound for a while. You didn't know?" I ask. Well, no one told him. "There was something in the paper that William wrote, but that was two months ago."

The most recent one, too. Obviously Mike did not read it.

"How are you?"

"No, I knew... I mean, I saw something about it a while back in the paper they have here, and, you know, word gets around..." He knows something, all right, and the few details he has are kind of disturbing. But it was a crazy couple of days. He hadn't jumped to any conclusions either way.

"I'm... good. Weird. Crazy. I'm gonna be a dad, apparently. How about you? I know you've had a rough time."

"Oh my God," Veronica breathed, stepping out into the rec room. She had found a green dress in the clothes bin and tucked her hair up as best as she could with what she had. Not that she really felt like celebrating after yesterday, but it was the new year either way. New Year's festivities with her group of friends had been in order for the evening but, looking around, she had a feeling they were about to make a change of plans.

"Actually," he said, sliding in behind her and leaning against the wall fairly casually. "Just Sam works for me," he said, nonchalantly as he polished his nails a little.

Veronica turned to look over her shoulder -- and then craned her head back to look up at him. For a moment she didn't say anything. Then she let out her brief in a little laugh, smile growing in wry amusement. "You arranged all this for me? You shouldn't have. It's not even my birthday."

"Funny story," he offered, slumping a little so he wouldn't be so tall. He wasn't exactly dressed up, still just in his jacket, jeans, and casual shirt. "I snapped my fingers and all this appeared." He offered a grin. "I'll start accepting praise now."

With her papers in order, Sacharissa was preparing to head home. "What is all this?" she asked, spinning around to take in the changes. Instinct took over as she slipped a notebook from her bag and began to dig through it for a pencil.

Caspian was on his way back to the drinks table (he had no intention of getting drunk, but he saw several things he wanted to try simply for curiosity's sake) when he bumped into a young lady, making her drop her notebook. "Please forgive me, my lady," he said, stooping to pick up her notebook and giving it back to her. "I was not watching where I was going. I am very sorry." He thought she looked familiar somehow, but he could not quite place her.

Sacharissa accepted the return of her notebook with a smile. "Thank you. That's quite alright, truly." It was a night for fun and enjoying oneself, so she offered her free hand. "I'm Sacharissa Cripslock."

Caspian took her hand and kissed it politely. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Cripslock," he said, finally recalling where he had seen her before. "I believe we have a friend in common - Eustace Scrubb?" He had greatly enjoyed teasing Eustace after he had seen the two talking together one evening.

New Year's Eve for Clementine almost always meant going out. She'd get dolled up, go out and some way or another, end up with her fingers around a cold drink. She had suspected that this year would end up being a big letdown.

The decorations were a welcome change, but it wasn't until she entered the kitchen for snack that Clementine finally really took notice of all that had changed.

There was alcohol. Vodka.

"Holy shit-- there is a God."

Meredith was poking around the kitchen, curiosity shifting to relief as she spotted the new liquor stock. "I'm gonna have to agree with you," she sighed. "Is that tequila over there?"

"You're fucking right it's tequila!" Clementine said. Because good alcohol and what looked like a good party called for colorful language. She took a shot of vodka and winced a little at how it went down, but there was definitely a wide grin on her face.

Meredith returned the grin as she dug around for a shotglass and the bottle. "If this is a dream, it's a damn good dream," she said. She threw back a shot of tequila and closed her eyes with a pleased smile, before offering a hand to the other woman. "I'm Meredith. I'm guessing this doesn't happen often?"
