It was Christmas Eve, babe...in the drunk tank, and an old man said to me, "won't see another one".

Christmas had always somewhat perplexed Eostre, if she was honest. She didn't understand. The trees were pretty. She'd always rather enjoyed the food, but it seemed to her that God got rather lost in it. The Christians had such a funny little ( Read more... )

Jeroen bounded into the rec-room a little excitedly. He'd been annoyed at first with the way the months seemed to have changed, but that was before he found out it was almost Christmas. He wasn't really hoping for much, but if the bookshelf seemed to think, as others said it did, he hoped it would be nice, as a Christmas present, and give him The Grinch Who Stole Christmas again.

He wouldn't have Crowley translating for him, but he thought he'd understand the story this time around.

Eoste lifted her head to watch as Jeroen bounded across the rec room, before letting her head fall back and taking another bite of her biscuit. The jukebox had moved on to a rousing rendition of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus."

Eostre rolled her eyes.

Jeroen spotted Eostre after a moment, and walked up to her, his enthusiasum never flagging. "Hallo," he said brightly, before sitting down beside her.

"Hello, sweetheart," said Eostre, lifting her legs to make room for him, and automatically handing him a biscuit. "How're we?"

"Goed," Jeroen said brightly, taking the biscuit. "Christmas," he announced, careful to pronounce it the way he'd heard it said.

"Yes, sweetheart, I know," she said, biting her own biscuit. "I've got you a present. Even though I don't believe in Christmas."

"Present?" Jeroen asked excitedly, because he'd finally found a English-Dutch dictionary, and trained himself on a few words that he found important. In honour of the Christmas season, he found the word present would be especially important.

"For tomorrow, yes," she said. "Just for you. Mike doesn't get anything." She reached out and smoothed his hair, then shifted her weight on the couch.

Jeroen wa pretty sure he understood what she was saying, and if he was correct, it was not so fair to Mike. He was gleeful regardless, and he leaned against her while he ate his cookie in a few quick bites.

She gave him a quick hug, still smoothing his hair.

"Do you ever brush your hair? What about your teeth? Toon me uw tanden."

((show me your teeth)

Jeroen smiled brightly at her, unsur why she asked, but happy enough to smile regardless. He hadn't touched a toothbrush.

Eostre's eyebrows shot up.

"Borstelt u uw tanden niet?"

((don't you brush your teeth?))

Jeroen's eyebrows furrowed, and he gave her a very strange look, one akin to the ones he gave her when she told him she was a goddess. "Geen," he said slowly.

Eostre made a slightly horrified face.

"And all those sweets? Your teeth will fall out of your head, and then who'll love you?"

Jeroen looked at her, understanding nothing but the face she had made. "What?" he asked. That had been one of the first words he'd translated.

"Als u uw tanden niet borstelt, zullen zij rotten."

She made a brushing motion with her finger in front of her mouth.
