Nick supposed he was entitled to a day off now and again, particularly since according to some theories he was on holiday from his regular life, but Nick enjoyed his trade, and wasn't at all unhappy to be spending his days working with wood outdoors, not to mention evenings doing the same by the fire. But a few hours off, now that he was quite ( Read more... )

"Is that a gift for the new baby?" Wilson asked the old man. "She wasborna few days ago, but I'm sure she'll grow into it." The man seemed familiar, too familiar. "I'm James, I feel like I should recognize you, but I don't."

"The new baby, the older baby, whatever little children might enjoy it," said Nick, giving the seat of the rocking horse a satisfied pat. It ought to last them a long, long time, through many children. "I don't believe we've ever met face to face," he added. "The name's Nick."

'Nick," he repeated. "It's very good that you're making gifts for the kids. There are quite a few of them here on the island, and... I worry about some of them. Occasionally a youngster shows up without any family. We do the best we can, but, well, everybody likes presents, especially when they don't expect anything."

"A gift given in good spirit is never a bad thing," Nick said with the surety of much experience. "I do hope all of the children have found themselves a family here, of some sort."

"They have, as far as I know," he said. "Everything is kind of informal, but the community pulls together when it has to. We sort of look after each other."

He paused for a few seconds and studied the old man as he worked. "You're... you're that Nick, aren't you? I'm Jewish, so we never really celebrated Christmas, but... wow." Wilson almost suppresed a "that's so cool!" grin.

"I suppose I might just be the Nick you think I am," said Nick, grinning back at him, "and I'm sure I can see my way to making sure you get something this year, if you'd like."

"There's only one person who could give me what I want," Wilson said. "And I haven't worked up the courage to ask for it." He shook his head, smiling wistfully. "But my friend House, he could use a new cane, something strong, and sturdy. The one he has now works, but it's very fancy. I don't think it was meant for every day use."

He stopped for a second, thinking about the crude stick House had shown him, the one he'd carved with his own hands. That he might ever have to use that one again... no. He didn't want House to have to go through that. "Just... don't let him know I was the one who asked."
