you can't fight gravity on a planet that insists that love is like falling

So she'd spent the weekend as a hyperactive child, as Little Mary Sunshine, as Suzie Homemaker. So she'd told Logan she wanted babies, and implied that they ought to be his. That didn't mean she had to wallow. Veronica Mars had been there and done that, and she had every intention of moving on ( Read more... )

What was with girls and climbing trees?

Jim spotted Veronica climbing up a nearby trunk and just watched for a moment, raising a brow. He had been looking for her; had to apologize for being an ass. He had never thought he'd ever do anything to make her cry, but she had. Even if she wasn't normal Veronica, which Jim figured she hadn't been, he still felt awful.

Walking over, he put his hands in his pockets, looking a bit nervous.

"Hey, Veronica," he greeted, looking up at her. "What...are you doing?"

Veronica turned and craned her neck to look down at him, offering a small smile and starting down. "I was looking for a way to end it all," she deadpanned dramatically, "but thank goodness for your intervention." And with that she dropped to the ground.

"Hanging is such a boring way to go," he said, shaking his head in disapproval. "I was thinking a lot of various death methods when I woke up on Monday. You can do better, Veronica."

Beat.

"Though I'd rather you not. The whole not wanting to lose a good friend thing and all."

"Yeah, well, I'm glad you didn't use any of them," she said, glance flickering away and back again. "And I was thinking more like I'd see if I could fly."

"Huh," he said, looking up to consider the thought. "I don't think flying works that way."

Joking had to be put aside, though, because Jim realized if he kept going he'd never apologize. He was at least glad to see she didn't hate him.

"Um," he began, looking over at her, growing just a bit more serious. "I've been looking for you, actually, if you can break away from your...attempts for a minute."

Veronica looked at him consideringly. "I guess I meant fall, not fly. Silly me. What's up, Jim?"

He heavily doubted she had forgotten what happened. He had changed and he still remembered things, so she probably did as well.

"I wanted to um, apologize. For...being crazy. Over the weekend," he explained, scratching the back of his neck a little nervously. "You know I'd never talk to you like that, right? I - I feel pretty horrible about it."

Veronica shook her head, the smile on her face small and awkward. "I know. You know you could never actually make me cry, right?" She tilted her head, and forced the smile bigger. "That wasn't - either of us back there." No matter what she'd whined about to Pam. "It's okay."

"I know. And I won't be trying to prove you wrong either. Making people cry is not really my thing."

Except, apparently, when islands switch him and make him go insane.

"I'm just glad I don't need to go crawl into a hole somewhere. The people I've pissed off seem to all understand. Even Tim, after I um...did stuff. To him."

He immediately winced at the thought of the kiss. That had been one of the low points of the weekend.

"What did you do to Tim?" she asked, confused. "'cause I basically asked Logan to be my babydaddy."

Jim rubbed his stemple, really wishing she hadn't asked the question. It was so much easier to leave it vague.

"Um,. I - I kind of forced myself on him and kissed him," he said, talking so fast that his words almost melded together. "Just to...mess around with his head."

He raised a surprised brow. Jim knew Veronica had been weird over the weekend, but that was pretty bad. He managed to bite back a laugh. "Well um, at least you weren't offering that to a complete stranger, at least. That'd be...sort of worse."

"...Yikes." Veronica blinked. At least she hadn't actually kissed Logan. "That's... That messes with my head."

She gave him a lopside frown and shrugged. "Well, I couldn't ask a stranger. I want to make sure my baby has a good daddy, right?" she said wryly.

"Yeah. It was really fun waking up and realizing I did that, let me tell you," he replied, just a faint hint of a scowl able to be seen. "Stupid island. I swear, if there were alcohol, I'd probably be driven to drink here."

He glanced at Veronica, frowning himself. "Guess so. Well, at least everyone knows it was all just...the island again. Or whatever. Though if you really do want a baby, you're not allowed to have one until you're at least thirty. By then if me and Pam have any kids they'll be old enough not to need a babysitter anymore."

And suddenly the idea of having a kid wasn't so far-fetched, especially considering they weren't exactly careful during the weekend. He tried not to think about it.

Veronica laughed incredulously, the sound catching in her throat. "Oh, God, Jim. No. No, I do- I don't even want to hear the word baby for at least a month. Thirty is... too soon for me. There - there will be no babies. And they will definitely not be Logan's. Any babies in the foreseeable future? All yours."
