When men say I'm sweet as candy It goes to my head like brandy, I enjoy being a girl

Anamaria felt distinctly odd when she awoke. Her head was throbbing and her mouth dry and cotton-filled. She ached all over and she whimpered at she sat up. "Oh, dear. What ever have I done?" Delicately, she pressed her hands to her aching head and tried not to weep as she struggled to recall what could have possibly happened that she should ( Read more... )

Sitting in his makeshift bookshop on the beach, rules inscribed in the sand on one side of him, his new books (a collection of leaves) on the other, Bernard had his coat and jacket off and was waiting for something to happen. Maybe a brainwave with opening the wine. So far he'd succeeded in getting one open by smacking the neck of the bottle against the rocks.

Red wine and blood was not a good taste. The scars weren't particularly attractive either, starting to scab over with a little bit of sand in them. But Bernard knew. He knew it was only a matter of time til he was back in London.

That's when he noticed the burning.

"HEY! HEY!" He shouted, chasing after the girl who had set it alight. "NO BURNING ALCOHOL IN MY SHOP. Can't you read the rules?" He gestured frantically back at the big sign in the sand which just said "No."

Anamaria stared at the running man, who was shouting at her in a most alarming fashion. She pressed her hand to her mouth...would he assault her? Would he...violate her?

Even the thought of it was too much and mercifully the world went black. Anamaria crumpled softly in a swoon.

"WHAT THE HELL?" Bernard asked no one in particular as the woman fainted, falling onto the ground. "Wake up!" He shouted down at her, totally lost as to what to do. "WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP!"

He was dancing a panicky sort of jig around the fallen woman, shouting over and over. "WAKE UP!"

Anamaria reawakened for yet the THIRD time today and discovered a man dancing about her, chanting. She screamed, hoping someone would hear, come to her rescue and stop him in whatever diabolical scheme he was planning.

As the girl opened her eyes, Bernard stopped his playing and stared down at her.

"Who are you and what are you doing burning things in my shop?" He demanded angrily and at the top of his lungs. "Can't you read the rules?"

Anamaria lay on the soft sand, terrified and cringing. "I'm so very sorry, sir. I never meant to cause any trouble. I was just destroying some of the vile liquor that so plagues our society."

She pushed herself up on her elbow, "Please, you lordship," For with his imperius manner he could hardly be elsewise, "you won't be cross with me, would you?"

Bernard could not believe this girl. She was burning ALCOHOL? VOLUNTARILY? This was just not on.

"ARE YOU STUPID?" He exclaimed, totally unable to wrap his head around the fact that someone would burn alcohol for no good reason. "WHY WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT?"

Anamaria cringed in abject terror at the large and terrifying man above her, "I do beg your pardon, sir. I never meant to upset anyone It is only that it is such a vile creation that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels."

Though she cringed, her voice rang with self-assurance. God was on her side.

Bernard could have kicked her, only he would never ever do that to a girl... unless it was Fran. Maybe. He growlled, but then he stopped. If they had alcohol, they'd have to have a way of opening it. Which would be very helpful.

"But how do they get it open?" He changed his tack, sorely hoping she'd give him what he wanted.

At least he wasn't shouting anymore. Anamaria sat up, "Sir? I do beg your pardon, but how do they open the rum?"

She made a face but sighed. It was very like a man to ask such a question of one who so obviously disapproved of the whole venture. That was after all the nature of men and they had to be allowed their indulgences. It was not a woman's place to scold. "A knife works passing well for removing cork. It's not necessary here however. Most drink isn't corked."

Bernard paused to take this information in. A knife, hey? Now where would he find one of those newfangled instruments? Perhaps at that compound he head so much about.

"Yes, right, yes." He was already backing away, rubbing his hands. "Well, goodbye! I hope your legs get better soon."

She gaped after him, unable to believe that he'd just abandoned her. The utter rudeness of it all! Petulantly, she threw a handful of sand after him and wished bitterly that he wouldn't find a single knife to be had.
