Saturday Matinee

There had been film cans on the shelf last night, and Jack wanted something to do out of the sunshine and inevitable work. He picked one at randome and loaded it up, sitting back comfortably as the grainy old movie started. Sweeping music came up witha map of Africa and the actors' names came up in script before the title.

"The Germans wore gray, you wore blue..." The Doctor settled in next to Jack. He'd thought he'd never want to watch a film again, but this one...this one he could deal with. "Can't get enough of the Second World War, can you, Captain Harkness..." He grinned.

((Believe it or not, Rhi has never seen Casablanca.))

"You know me too well, Doctor. It's no Blitz, but then...not much is," he said with a wide smile. "I wish I had my hat, still. That was a good hat."

The Doctor leaned into him a bit. "Yeah, it was. Might get it out of the clothes bin, or something similar. Though it's not made for this weather."

Jack laid his arm over the Doctor's shoulder casually and slouched a little. "Mmm, yeah. And your leather coat. I liked that coat. Fashion here is so...non-existant."

He eyed the white tux and black tie, the suits and shoes. "Good era for clothes then."

"Well, it's hard to manage, with everyone coming in and the bin being the only place for other attire." The Doctor stretched and got more comfortable. "And I switched to pinstripes, though that coat was good for staying warm."

He gave him a non-commital grunt and watched Victor lead Ilsa away. "What do you think about Rick and Renault there?"

"It's undertones that would have been far more prevalent had the studio codes not been in place," the Doctor said, thinking. "Happened a lot in that cinema period, partially because of the queer influence on Hollywood and because of the war. Men couldn't quite reconcile their feelings for each other."

"I think it's cute. Friends, enemies...and it's not really about the two of them anyhow," he said quietly, his fingers idly moving up and down the Doctor's arm.

"It's about love in general," the Doctor said, leaning his head on Jack's shoulder. "And it's about the war. But the fact their relationship's not obvious is more beautiful and yet tragic than if it were blatant."

"It's obvious if you know what to look for," he said quietly as he tightened his arm. With everyone around he wasn't sure if they'd appreciate a second show going on...and besides, being obvious was something the Doctor always accused him of.

"Comfortable?"

"Mm, I suppose, but at the time some didn't..." The Doctor smiled a little bit and enjoyed the touch. God, it felt good to be friends with Jack again. Though he was never one for excessive displays in public.

"Yes, quite. Though I'm too lazy to go make some popcorn."

"You'll just have to suffer, I guess. Unless someone brings some in to share," he said softly as more people came in. He could feel the pull of the smile as close as the Doctor was and he relaxed even more.

"I'd want my own," the Doctor said, pitching his voice appropriately for the room. "I only share with some people, anyway, I'm selfish like that. You know me."

Didn't escape him, how Jack was smiling at that...Angel, was it? the former vampire. But he didn't mind, was how Jack was.

"I do know you, more than you think," he said against his hair as he watched Angel watch the film. Gods, that mouth. Why in the hell was everyone around here so pretty?

Really, the island just seemed to encourage Jack in the whole sex business...but whatever. The tradeoff was worth it, having Jack here.

"Like what do you know?" the Doctor asked, grinning some more.

"Shh, watch the movie," he whispered, not even going to whisper the things he knew in a crowded room.
