this world is only gonna break your heart

Her world was spinning apart in her hands. Oh, it could always get worse. If anyone knew that, it was Veronica Mars. But that didn't keep it from being pretty damn bad.

She had thought it bad enough when she took a bet that she had known she shouldn't have (but when you gamble like that, you deal with the consequences), and she had thought it ( Read more... )

Chase heard the music and wandered in, seeing the canisters of film and heading over there, almost checking to see if anyone was watching. He almost jumped, startled when he saw Veronica and he eased away from the films, heading to her side. "Cheer up?" he suggested half-heartedly.

Veronica looked up, mustering the energy for a wry smile. Great. Now it's showing on my face. Stop pouting, Veronica. "I keep trying, but all I can manage is cheering down," she deadpanned.

Chase just eased in, kicking up his feet. "I guess something happened between the ball and today, because you seemed high in the sky then." His tone, though, was quiet and confidential.

Veronica raised an eyebrow at him. "Is this what they call bedside manner?" she inquired, eyes narrowing slightly. "Are you trying to diagnose me with something? 'cause I don't think you can cure life sucking."

She worried at her lower lip a moment, then her glance flickered over at him again. "The film over there. It's us. It isn't just movies, it's... us. Wallace found one of ours."

Archie was not entirely sure why he felt the need to frequent the rec room so often but he rather liked it even now that his hut was finally finished. He just hoped the jukebox would mind its manners and not play anymore songs about angels in starships or sailing away.

He decided to leave the books along, remembering last time, which left either twiddling his thumbs in a corner or pestering Veronica as the only two alternative means of occupying his time.

The lieutenant moved closer to his friend, inspecting the strange device she had hooked up to her ears. It was entirely too small to be a CD walkman so... "What is that?" he asked with a curious smile.

Veronica glanced up, managing a smile at the sight of Archie, who was, at least, wholly unrelated to anything on her mind. Pulling the earbuds gently out, she said, "It's an iPod. For listening to music. All the songs are stored right on this, and it's a lot better than letting the jukebox pick."

"Brilliant," he murmured, impressed by the thought of something so small holding anything at all inside of itself. And the notion of better music than that provided by the machine in the corner of the rec room. "How have you been, Veronica?"

"I've been better," she admitted. "But I've been worse, too. How 'bout you?" Archie was sweet, but Veronica had never been one for confidantes.

Jim had been wandering about with little to do, so he opted to hang out in the rec room for a while until Pam was off work. He was happy to see Veronica at first, but he immediately felt a twinge of concern when he saw her expression.

He headed over, looking down at her. He cleared his throat, trying not to sound worried. "Hey there, Happy. Mind some company?"

She blinked up, tugging the earbuds gently out. "Seat's all yours, Dopey." Veronica faked a sweet smile, but it really was good to see Jim, so she patted the couch beside her.

He rolled his eyes, but his smile remained good-humored. He settled into the seat, leaning back against the arm of the couch.

"You seem like a bright ray of sunshine today," he quipped, raising a brow. "Something wrong?"

"Wait, am I not a bright ray of sunshine always?" Veronica stared at him, mock-offended.

Something wrong? "Everything's a little wrong," she admitted. "I've seen myself on TV. I never really did want those fifteen minutes."

Logan was still... off. Off was the only way to describe it, because, well, he wasn't on. He was getting better though, learning not to think about it. Neil was helpful of course, a constant distraction in his own home, but he still caught himself staring at the can of film now and then, wondering if there were more... of if that was the only one.

And now he had the can of film in his hand, a little sandier then when he'd first found it, but he'd decided to put it back where it came from. After all, it wasn't really his to burn. and with any luck, the shelf would just... poof it or something.

As he approached the rec room, he could hear that song, and he nearly just left the can in the hall and headed back out the door, but screw that. He wasn't going to let the island get to him, not now.

So yeah, he was a little surprised when he entered the room to find it wasn't him the island was torturing it all, it was Veronica.

"Hey," he said awkwardly, standing dumbly just inside the door frame, the film still clutched in one hand.

Even as she felt right now, Veronica was observant, and the cannister of film stood out. After what she had seen, she wanted to slap him, to scream at him, to curl up in a ball and never face him again.

But curiosity as ever got the better of her. "Which one did you find?" she asked weakly. Please don't let it be the same one, please don't let it be the same one...

Logan looked down at the can of film. "How did you...? It's the school election from last year, and uhm, some other stuff," he answered quietly, giving her a confused look. "Why, what did you find?" he asked, hoping she hadn't seen the same thing.

"Tragically," Veronica said wryly, "it seems we missed the greatest replacement prom ever. Prom gets canceled for alcohol violations, but you're still the host with the most. God bless teen drama." And maybe she had a few questions for him after all.

Yawning, the Doctor entered the rec room to raid the bookshelf, and spotted the banana girl, Chase's friend. She...looked distressed.

"This is why one carries about a banana," he said, giving her a little smile.

Veronica raised an eyebrow as she looked up at him. Ah, yes - the Doctor. "Really?" she asked, smiling wryly. "They're the only thing that can destroy the jukebox? Why have you kept it secret so long?"

"Well, there's that, though I meant to cheer up despondent-looking young women." The Doctor cocked his head a little and sat down further along, but not too far off. "Little potassium always helps."

"Huh." Veronica looked over at him. Great. Now her depression was so great it was obvious to strange banana-carrying men. "And where's this magic banana now? Please tell me it didn't dissolve in a burst of innuendo."
