The island sucked even more than usual. Everyone was still preoccupied with the hurricane, but Regina thought it was about time to move on. It happened and it's over. End of story ( Read more... )

Yuri was feeling rather depressed. It wasn't the storm itself but that she was so useless and she just wasn't happy about that. Kei could rebuild and she could help a little bit, but Chris knew more about it and so perhaps there was something more productive. Maybe work in the kitchen.

That was scary to think about, especially with so many people in the compound now. Meals weren't for fifty, more like one hundred or more people if you could manage it. But... once a week was doable for a Trouble Consultant, surely? She was thinking about it.

Okay... someone she didn't know on the beach. Pretty much knew what she was about, though.

"Avocados would work, too--because of all the protein," she said knowledgeably. "They're good for skin as well and if you can take a little bit of sugar and mix it with water into a paste it's a great exfoliant."

Oh yeah.

Regina didn't feel like talking to people, not with mangoes in her hair, but she wasn't going to turn away hair & skin advice. "Really? Do you know where I could get some?" she asked.

"They're all over the place," she said. "They're a bit harder to find than the mangoes because they're darker. But there are avocado trees in a few places--by the compound there are some."

She'd picked her own for the sashimi trays.

"And you'll probably want to use fresh water to wash that out--make your hair softer." Seawater did nasty things to hair if you didn't watch it closely. "There's the waterfall by the caves or the other spring 'cause I can't imagine you'll want to walk around like that. Or use seawater now but plan for the future."

Nobody ever did just one treatment or facial. No way.

"Okay." She would probably go find the avocados after she was finished with her hair. "And, like, I totally wasn't planning on going in the ocean to wash this off," she said, dryly. Okay, so maybe she had, but she wasn't going to admit that. She didn't need anymore advice from someone who had been stupid enough to get blue highlights.

Sure she wasn't, but Yuri didn't say anything. Hey, the girl was young and learning.

"Figured you weren't, but you are here and it's awfully convenient," she lied easily. "My name's Yuri, by the way. Haven't seen you around--have you been here long?"

Hey, it was boring waiting for nails to dry, and other beauty regimen bits. Just dullsville. Talking helped--why did women go to spas in groups, duh?

"The name's Regina," she said. "I guess it's been like three weeks, although it feels like forever. There's not much to do here," she frowned, "and most of the guys are gay." Basically, this place sucks.

Yuri grinned.

"We've been here four months--my friend Kei and I. Our ship crashed." And it wasn't my fault!

"Totally weird because we weren't anywhere near Earth at the time..." she said. And the time difference thing. "Anyway, the smile was because every guy Kei meets is totally gay. It's killing me."

She smirked.

"The first one we met when we got here--huge, muscles, total stud. Kei's hormones were likely heard on other continents. Totally gay and I completely lost it." She shook her head. The man had been really nice about everything, too. Shame he was gay, but he was gone now, too.

"They aren't all queer, though." Good thing, too.

"Are you from Outer Space or something?" Regina asked. Ugh, why does she always end up talking to the people from other planets or all that weird shit? She didn't like it. "And, yeah, I guess they're not all gay. And even if they are, it doesn't matter. I can change that," she said, with confidence.

"Born on Koucha, went to Planet Meiji University, currently live on Pacifica--before we ended up here." She was proud of it--no reason not to be. Meiji was a good school and she'd kicked ass, and Pacifica was nice. (WWWA paid well.)

"Are you from Earth? That's so cool. Earth's protected when I'm from, because we all came from Earth and they don't want it to get ruined."

"Uh, I haven't heard of any of that stuff," Regina said, kind of bored with the conversation. What the fuck is Planet Meiji University? "And, yeah, I'm from Earth. So are most people on the island - the normal ones." When Regina gets bored, her natural bitchiness shines through.

"Well, the United Galactica isn't formed until way after the year 2000, which is about when most of the Earthers are from, so no wonder you've not heard of it."

She probably wouldn't have heard of it anyway--obviously not into learning new things. Weird, since she was probably still in school--looked about that age.

"I've met a lot of people from a lot of different places," she said. "Mostly pretty cool. Don't know who you've spoken to."

Girl was probably sticking with her comfort zone and not taking advantage of the opportunities to meet new and interesting people.

"Talk to someone different some time--you might learn something." That remark should annoy the girl. Regina, whatever. Knew the type because that hadn't changed. Only brains counted for a shipload more in the twenty-second century. Still, she was pretty enough to be in porns.

"Pretty cool? You have got to be kidding me," said Regina. "They're usually losers in some way or another, and I'm not interested in talking to someone different and learning or whatever. I want to talk to my kind of people," she said, firmly. Really, was that so much to ask for?

"Well, there are a few losers," she said. Dr. Baltar was a lump, but he was so decorative about it. And Regina looked fairly useless at this point.

"What are your kind of people?" This should be good. Rich, pretty, stupid people.

"Well, it's kind of hard to explain," she said. "The only real requirement is that they're hot. And, like, they can't be weird." Regina was never very articulate.

Whoa! Everyone down to the shallow end of the pool!

"I've seen some hot people here," Yuri said. She did include herself in that assessment, thank you. "But everyone's idea of weird is different. Some of the things I've seen..."

The girl did not want to hear it, for sure.

"Three thousand planets in United Galactica so there's some really weird stuff out there. But if you're used to just one then the genetic enhancements are probably new to you." Blue hair, great health, everything that went with it.

"Genetic enhancements?" Regina asked. "What do those do?" She was all for them if they got rid of the freaks, people like Janis Ian.
