“I don’t know why you trust him,” Ebenezar said without looking behind him. His wards had already told him who was coming. There was no reason for the old wizard to stop pitching dirty hay from one of the stalls into the wheelbarrow behind him.
“He won’t betray me,” The Archive said.
There was a strange mix of child and ageless being in the Archive’s voice. He remembered hearing that voice for the first time, how it had surprised him and amused him. He had quickly gotten over his amusement when the little girl had put him in his place. Since then, he had always treated the Archive with the respect she deserved.
“You know what he is and you can still trust him. That’s a feat, Archive.”
Finished with the stall, Ebenezar set aside his pitch fork and picked up his staff turning to face the child that possessed the knowledge of the world. She was such a little thing and it never stopped surprising him, the child’s body and the limitless mind that the Archive possessed. He quite liked her, when she let the child through but he had always been fond of children.
Her power was unmistakable though. Even from the distance of the barn between them he could feel it radiating off of her in waves. Even the Merlin knew not to mess with the Archive and if they tried, the Hellhound was right there to destroy them first. He could feel that creature pacing on the edges of his wards. His land was more than strong enough to keep him out. For now, he ignored the Hellhound and focused on the girl.
“What can I do for you, Archive?”
“I want to learn to ride,” she said, standing on a bale of hay to look in on a stall with a mare and her foal. “Kincaid says I can’t because it’s too dangerous.”
“Aye, it can be, but shouldn’t you already know? I’m sure you’ve got stores of knowledge on it.”
“Knowing and doing are two different things, Blackstaff.”
The Archive turned to face him. Her eyes seemed to flash for a second and then it all dissolved into a pout. The child was clearly visible now and it made him smile. Ever since meeting Harry she had continued to allow the child to come out more and more.
“Are you saying no?”
“Of course not.” Ebenezar grinned, “Nothing will annoy the Hound more than having you under my tutelage and him stuck out there unable to watch over you.”
