Fanfiction: Young At Heart

Ebenezar poured the last of the grain into the bucket and pushed it underneath his mare’s nose. The chestnut started eating right away, paying minimal attention to him. Apparently his younger appearance didn’t spook the horse. Probably because he smelled the same, but he sure as hell didn’t look the same. He reached out and patted the horse’s flank.

“Somethin’s up here, I know it. I can feel it in my bones.” He said. The mare’s ears twitched slightly but she gave no other indication that she was listening to him. Of course she was. The horses always listened to him, they just didn’t stop eating to do it. Sort of like Hoss when he was a teenager.

He looked towards the water trough where he had first noticed the change. In a house without mirrors, nothing had given away that he’d been changed until he got a look in the water. That had been one hell of a shock, one of the biggest in Ebenezar’s life. Most people would be grateful to be young again, but he wasn’t most people. A change like this meant someone powerful had worked magic on him inside his warded house, his warded property. Whoever had done this was a powerful force and Ebenezar did not look forward to reckoning with them.

“Mab says it wasn’t her.” He muttered, leaning back against the fence and looking out over his property. “She’d do somethin’ like this, maybe offer me the Winter Knight mantel. Look what I can do, Ebenezar, give you back your youth and vitality, while still having all your power. Come be my knight, you’ll be young forever and have all the power of the Winter Court on your side.”

The mare snorted and he smiled, “Don’t think that’s it, girl?” he took a moment to chuckle. “You’re probably right. Mab would have shown up and done it while I was watchin’ to show me her power. This is somethin’ that doesn’t want me to know it was them. Which is why I think it’s a threat.”

Though still eating, the mare managed to give him a look that clearly said she thought he was paranoid. “You know, as a prey animal you should understand that feelin’ better.” He scowled slightly at her. “I’m not being paranoid. This,” he gestured to himself, “was a big show of power. It’s sort of like Mab, only look at how much power I have and guess what I can do with it? Kill ya.”

He trailed off, scowling at the ground at his feet. He didn’t like this, even though everyone else seemed amused by it. The forces it took to reverse what time had done to him were amazing and had it happened to someone else, he might have been impressed. As it was, this was happening to him and it bothered him. He was the Blackstaff, he should understand what happened to him better. He was going to figure it out too, even if it meant spending most of his time in his cellar reading through his books.

“I’m not gonna stay this way.” He said to the mare, picking up the now empty bucket, “I’m gonna be me again.”
