The difference is that when you pick your own number, you find your higher number easier to accept, because there's an element of personal responsibility to it. If it's just randomly assigned, it feels a lot less fair, and also it's not as transparent a process. With this system, things like bribes are less possible.
well, I just can't understand how anyone could think that randomly choosing out of a hat is any fairer than having a program computing numbers with a random seed. I think it would help the administration in general and save a lot of time.
also, the source code could always be publically available to prove that there are no 'if ($name == "Brennan Dunn" ) { $number = 1; }'s are possible.
wow, i'm ashamed that it actually took me a minute to figure out why i didn't recognize any of the names on that list. also, i don't trust technology. well, i don't trust most things--guess i'm paranoid. if i were playing the assassins game, i'd be even more paranoid--i'd probably start getting people to test my food to make sure it wasn't poisoned...with, like...i don't know...food coloring...or something equally not-lethal. so instead of assassins, i want to play conspirators and sell out the assassins' identities. but i'm not that mean, so i won't. it occurs to me that i have my own journal for such rambling. forgive me.
actually, all those people on that list are members of my conspiracy...against YOU! anyways, yeah, I don't mind if you fill my journal with rants. it's pretty bleak and desolate to begin with, so it's a nice change.
and now, I must return to being an anti-social loner on a friday night!
psh, first rule of conspiracy: do not let target see list of conspirators. i mustherefore assume that you're conspiring on your own conspiracy, for which i congratulate you. also, i agree with that other guy--you should be the pope...or at least start going around campus blessing people.
