Pairing: Hodgins/Angela and Booth/Brennan (Who else is there?)

Spoiler: Shipper alert! In their newest case, Booth must overcome many obstacles… clowns and another man attracted to Bones, to solve the murder of a rodeo clown. But before the case is solved he will be confronted with his greatest fear, a life without Bones.

Next morning
Booth is awakened by the telephone ringing. He looks around, shocked that he never made it to the couch. He reaches for the phone and bumps into Bones who is also awakened. She hands him the phone. “Hello,” he says groggily.

“Booth, it’s Angela. Did I wake you?”

“No, we were just getting up.”

“We?” she says.

“Listen Angela, do you need something?” he says agitated.

“Yeah Booth, I wanted to check in to see if Brennan was doing any better. Also, I thought you were coming in today? It’s almost lunch time.”

“Lunch time?” he says as he turns to look at the clock on the bedside table. Amazingly, its after 11am.

“Booth, can you get my medication? I’m going to start getting ready for the lab,” says Bones as she makes her way to the bathroom.

“Yeah, Angela. It looks like we’ll be stopping by soon. I need to go. Bones needs her medication.” Booth retrieves her medication along with a glass of juice and places it on the nightstand on her side of the bed. He returns to the kitchen where he prepares her a bowl of her favorite cereal. As he brings it back to sit with her juice, Bones emerges from the bathroom.

“I can’t believe we slept so long. It was nice to be able to rest without all the nurses and doctors. However, I’m sure the main reason is because I was here with you. I never feel more safe or loved than when I with you.” She smiles as she approaches him. He decides a quick escape is needed.

“I need to jump in the shower, Bones. I’ll be ready soon. I put your pills with juice and cereal on the nightstand.” Bones takes her medication and eats her cereal. She decides to stretch out on the bed while waiting for Booth. She closes her eyes and images start running through her mind. She sees herself riding in Booth’s car, in the interrogation room, and on a date, but not with Booth. She shakes the images from her mind believing they must have happened some time ago because she is with Booth now. The bathroom door opens and out walks Booth wrapped only in a towel. Startled to find Bones still in the room, he quickly retreats back to the bathroom.

Bones laughs as she opens her eyes seeing the bathroom door close. “What’s wrong Booth? Why are you being so shy? You sure weren’t shy when we were in the storage area for the Egyptian exhibits or in that cabin in the woods. Come on out.” She laughs, “I’ll take my dishes into the kitchen and give you some privacy.”

Booth peeks around the bathroom door and seeing that she is no longer in the room, he goes to his closet and thinks to himself, Egyptian exhibit, cabin. What is she talking about?

At the lab, everyone is happy to see Dr. Brennan. “We’re only going to stay a little while Bones. I don’t want you to overdo it by pushing yourself. Go check your messages then we’re going back home. The remains have waited for 200 years so I don’t think a few more days will hurt. I need to talk with Angela so I’ll come get you in a little bit.”

“Sure honey, whatever you say,” replies Bones with a little sarcasm who then leans over and gives him a kiss on the cheek. Booth thinks ‘I could definitely get used to this… but remember this is only temporary.’ Bones goes to her office while Booth sets out to find Angela.

“Hey Ange, got a sec?”

“Sure Booth, how’s Brennan doing?”

“Not much change but she has been saying a few things that I don’t understand.”

“Like what Booth?”

“Well, this morning I came out of the shower wrapped in a towel and Bones was in the bedroom.”

Angela can’t help but smile. “Uh huh, go on.”

“Anyway, I ducked back into the bathroom and she said she didn’t understand why I was being modest after the time we had spent in the cabin and in Egyptian storage. I really don’t know what she is talking about?”

“That’s strange, that sounds like me and Hodgins.” At that moment Bones stops by.

“Hey Bones, you okay?”

Bones replies, “Yeah Booth, I just wanted to talk with Angela a few moments before we leave. Oh, Hodgins says he needs you to help him finalize some of his paperwork for the cowboy case.”

Booth leaves the room and Bones takes a seat on Angela’s couch. She begins with “Angela can we talk, I need some advice.”

Shocked at the request, she says, “Sure honey, what’s up?”

“Booth is acting strange around me. I don’t why. We’ve been together for years. I’m not sure if he’s uptight around me because of my injury or what. I think I’m going to convince him that we should go out tonight. Maybe a nice meal and some dancing. That should loosen him up and I don’t remember us dancing since that case several years ago with the cannibal. What do you think?”

Angela is so tempted to tell Brennan the truth but the doctors told them not to push her back into reality and what could it hurt, maybe a date is exactly what these two need to get things moving in the right direction. “I think that would be a great idea just don’t overdo it sweetie, you just got out of the hospital yesterday.”

“I know Angela, how about you give me a ride back home. I need to look for my rings.”

“What rings Sweetie?”

“You know Angela, the family ring my father gave me and my engagement ring. I must have left them at home for some reason before I was injured.”

“Engagement ring?”

“Yeah, Angela, I’m sure you didn’t forget we were engaged.”

Pausing to remember the doctor’s words but also deciding it might be a good opportunity to get her friend to open up a little, “No honey, I didn’t forget. I have been meaning to ask you something though. What made you change your mind about marriage?”

“I’m not sure Ange. I always said that I didn’t agree with the concept of marriage and that I would need a very good reason to even consider it. I believe I found that reason when I met Booth. He once asked me if I believed in fate. Of course I didn’t, but he has opened my eyes to so many things and changed my life. Maybe it was fate that we met. I think, I hope, that I’m a better person because of his influence on my life. I guess what I’m saying is that I love him and can’t imagine my life without him. I know that no other person could ever mean as much to me as Booth.”

Angela has never seen her friend so happy, giddy almost, just by talking about Booth and she knows that brain injury or not, what Brennan is saying is actually her true feelings being revealed. She decides she is going to have to talk with Booth and hope either he can find a ring somewhere or explain to her why she doesn’t have an engagement ring.

“So can you give me a ride? I’d like to pick up a dress and a little something sexy for later.” The two friends exchange a glance and Angela thinks ‘Oh my, Booth doesn’t know what he is in for. I think he might need a little help.’

Meanwhile, Booth is talking with Hodgins. He gets a text message from Angela while Bones is calling to check her messages at home that says ‘Invite us out to dinner. Trust me.’ A little confused but trusting Angela, he asks Hodgins if he and Angela would like to join him and Bones for dinner. Hodgins readily accepts as the two ladies exit Angela’s office.

“You ready to go Bones.”

“Yes, but Angela is going to give me a ride back to my place so I can pick up a few things. I thought maybe we could go out tonight and Angela didn’t bring anything over last night that says nice restaurant. I don’t want you to have to cook for me again.”

“Wow, what a coincidence,” Booth exchanges a glance with Angela, “I just asked Hodgins if he and Angela would like to go out with us tonight.”

Bones is disappointed to have company on their date but agrees. “I’ll give Brennan a ride and why don’t you boys pick us up at her place, say about 6 o’clock. Then we’ll have a nice dinner and maybe a little dancing,” says Angela.

“I don’t know, that might be too much for one evening,” says Booth.

Bones wraps her arm through his and says, “Come on babe, that sounds like fun, plus I can’t ever remember going on a double-date with anyone.” When she flashes that smile and bats those beautiful blue eyes he is powerless.

“Okay, if you really want to but we can’t stay out too late. You’ll need to get back home and into bed.”

“Exactly what I was thinking,” says Bones as she cuts her eyes toward Angela.

Later that afternoon, Booth is home watching a game. He looks around his apartment. Suddenly it feels so empty. Bones had not even been there with him a full 24 hours but he already missed her. He sees her empty glass on the counter. ‘Oh, her medicine. I better get the bottle from the bedroom. It will be past time for her to take it.’ He walks into his bedroom and looks at his hockey t-shirt laying on the bed, still unmade from last night. Remembering laying there with her, holding her while she slept, he had never felt more complete than in that moment. Shaking off those thoughts, knowing she wasn’t truly herself, he decides he needs to start getting ready. He showers then changes into a dark pair of jeans, striped socks, a burgundy dress shirt, and his leather jacket.

There’s a knock at the door. He opens it to Hodgins. “Hey man, you about ready for our date?” he says jokingly.

“Date? Oh my gosh, I’m going on a date with Bones.’ Booth turns from the door and begins pacing in the living room.

“Dude, what’s wrong?”

“I’m going on a date with Bones. I had not been thinking of it as a date. We’ve been out together dozens of times but never as a date.”

“Dude, calm down, what’s the big deal?”

Usually not a man to share things, he decides he needs to talk with someone and at this time Hodgins is the only one around. “Do you know how many times I’ve thought about asking Bones out on a date? But she’s all about science and she always tells me that monogamy and marriage are ludicrous and how you need common ground to make a relationship work. Now here we are, Bones is not herself and we’re going on a date.”

“It’s okay Booth. She should be back to her old self any day now. Isn’t that what the doctor said?”

Booth replies, “I know Hodgins but you haven’t seen how she is acting around me. She’s calling me honey and baby, kissing me on the cheek, holding my hand, and you saw her last night in my t-shirt. I’m a strong man Hodgins, but even a strong man couldn’t resist Bones. I just don’t want to do something that she’ll regret when she’s back to her old self. It would feel like I was taking advantage of the situation.”

Hodgins gets a serious look on his face. “Hey man, she cares about you. We all can see it. Maybe this temporary out-of-body experience is a good thing. Today at the lab she seemed to be her old self. She’s still brilliant and doesn’t seem to have forgotten anything from her past. She just seems so much happier and the only difference is that she believes she is in love with you and in a committed relationship. Play your cards right my friend and I think this could be the new Dr. Brennan.”

“I don’t know Hodgins, you think this is a good idea?”

Hodgins looks at his friend. “Hey, Angela would kill me if I said otherwise, but I honestly think it is a good idea. We all love Dr. B and we want her to be happy. You can’t imagine how much you have changed her life. You got her out of the lab and helped her experience what the world was really like. Not just the science of it but actually how things are. The emotions of real people and what they say about a person, not just what their bones say about them. Even when we were buried alive, her faith in you was strong. She knew you wouldn’t give up on us, on her. And I think for that her heart is less guarded and more open to the possibility of finding someone who cares about her, someone that will not abandon her like all the other men in her life.”

Booth pauses as he absorbs what Hodgins is telling him. He trusts him. He was there when they saved Bones from being killed by a corrupt FBI agent and he has known Bones longer than he has. Despite all his conspiracy theory ravings about the government, he is a good man. “Thanks Hodgins. I know you want what is best for her. Regardless of what happens between us, I want you to know as her friend that I will always be there for Bones. No matter what I will not be another man to betray her.”

Hodgins pats his friend on the back. “Great, let’s go pick up the beautiful women that are waiting for us. Do you need any tips on how to woo Dr. Brennan? You know I was pretty romantic which helped me convince Angela that taking a chance on us was worth the risk to our professional relationship.”

Booth laughs as they walk out the door. “No thanks, Hodgins. It may have been a long time but I still have a few moves.”

Meanwhile, at Dr. Brennan’s apartment, she and Angela are putting the final touches. Bones looks in the mirror, upset that she is unable to cover up the bruise on her head with the makeup. “Hey sweetie, don’t worry about it. You look beautiful. Believe me, in that dress, Booth is not going to be focused on that bruise.”

Smiling, she turns away from the mirror to face her best friend. Angela is wearing a long tank top style dress with lots of color. Bones is wearing a simple royal blue knee length baby doll dress with her hair swept up showing off her mother’s earrings. “Thanks Angela. Do you think I look alright? I’m still upset that I found my family ring but not my engagement ring. Maybe it’s at Booth’s.” She takes a deep breath. “I don’t know why I am so nervous. It’s Booth. We’ve been together for a while now. It’s not like this is our first date.”

Angela smiles knowing her friend should be totally nervous since it is their first real date.

“Oh can you bring my car over to Booth’s tomorrow. I’d like to be able to run some errands such as grocery shopping. He has no food and he’s always been particular about me driving his car.”

“Sure, Hodgins and I will swing by tomorrow afternoon.”

Brennan turns to face the mirror again. “I thought I would wear my mother’s earrings tonight. Do you remember when Booth gave one to me after that trip to New Orleans? That is the first time I knew that he really cared about me. He flew down to make sure I was alright then stole evidence, this earring, from the crime scene jeopardizing his job.”

“Yeah sweetie, I remember. Booth is an amazing man and I believe he cares deeply for you.”

“I know Angela. I know that he loves me. He told me so last night after we climbed in bed and we were drifting off to sleep,” says Bones.

“Really,” says Angela giving her friend one of those looks, “and what did you say?”

“Well I said it first. He is amazing and I love him very much. He’s saved my life on many occasions but not only that he is romantic. Like our first date when he took me to the playground to swing or when we made Christmas ornaments for our tree on our first holiday together.”

Angela looks at her friend very confused. Those are her memories with Hodgins. Why does Brennan think that she and Booth did those things? She’s thinking and suddenly realizes that Brennan must of heard her talking about Hodgins while she was in the coma and somehow thought that those things had happened to her. Then Booth was there talking to her and in her mind she decided that she and Booth were a couple. Angela doesn’t know exactly why she thinks they are engaged, maybe it had something to do with her reading from that bridal magazine. Nothing else was wrong with her friend. She was only under the assumption that she and Booth were dating, no other disillusions of reality. That was the reason she was so happy. She was in love, which Angela believed she had been for a while, but now was able to show it. Maybe she should just tell her…..

Before Angela could say anything, there was a knock at the door. “Ange, can you get that. It must be the guys. I just need to get my jacket and purse.”

“Okay, sweetie,” she replies hoping it might give her a minute to tell Booth what she has figured out. She picks up her sweater and purse and goes to open the door.

Hodgins and Booth come in and Hodgins turns to Angela giving her a soft kiss. “Hey, you look great. I hope I’m dressed okay.”

“You look great, Jack. Jeans and a sweater are just fine. Hey, I’m just glad us ‘squints’ have an excuse to get out of those blue lab coats and into something nice. Booth, we need to talk. I figured out what’s going on with Brennan. She…”

But before she can continue, Bones walks into the living room and Booth’s attention is now focused on his beautiful partner. He walks away from the couple as Angela is in mid-sentence. “Bones, wow, you look beautiful,” he says smiling ear to ear.

“Thank you Booth, you look very handsome,” she says as she reaches up to adjust the collar on his coat.

Angela leans over to whisper what she has discovered to Hodgins. He in turn tells her about the conversation between himself and Booth. They smile and decide to do their best to finally get these two together. Booth and Bones are just standing there smiling at each other, just like school kids.

Hodgins speaks up, “We need to get going if we’re going to make our reservation.”

“May I help you with your coat?” asks Booth.

“Why thank you,” replies Bones as she hands him her jacket. He helps her slide it on and catches a whiff of her perfume. Hodgins and Angela head out into the hallway as Booth takes her hand and leads her to the door.

“You smell amazing.” She almost blushes at his statement. This is going to be a night to remember.

At the restaurant, the group is having a wonderful time laughing and reminiscing about how they all met. They are great friends and realize that they need to spend more time together outside of work. After they finish their delicious meal, the group decides they are not ready for the evening to end so they move over to the bar area where there is a band and dance floor.

A great dance song is playing so Angela pushes her friend onto the dance floor. “We’ll be back in a minute, guys,” she says.

They start dancing and Brennan says, “You remember the last time we went dancing?”

“Yeah sweetie, it was like 4 years ago and you ending up getting into a fight, knocking a guy into the wall, and exposing a mummified corpse. Let’s hope this evening turns out much better.”

As the girls are dancing, having a good time, Hodgins and Booth get a beer and lean back against the bar and smile as their “girls” seem to be enjoying themselves.

“It has been an amazing evening,” says Hodgins.

“Yeah I agree. I don’t remember the last time I had this much fun,” says Booth. “Angela is amazing Hodgins. You are a lucky man.”

“Same goes for Dr. Brennan, and not to exaggerate but we’re probably the luckiest guys in this place.” They watch as men slowly make their way toward the girls. The guys smile as they turn each one down. Booth can’t help but to remember all the men wanting to dance with Bones out in Washington when they were investigating the human remains found in a bear. She’s stunning, he thinks, and draws attention wherever she goes. The singer of the band says its time to slow things down as the evening comes to a close.

The band begins to play a slow song and Hodgins looks to Booth. “Hey man, that’s our cue.” They head onto the dance floor and Hodgins embraces Angela.

Booth and Bones share an awkward moment as he digs his hands into his pockets and shrugs his shoulders, shy like a teenager. Booth clears his throat and says, “May I have the honor?” Bones smiles and wraps her arms around his neck. Angela watches the couple and when the next song begins she knows that she needs to let Booth know about the conversation she had with Brennan.

“Hodgins, go ask Brennan to dance. I need to talk with Booth.”

“Are you sure we should interrupt?”

“Yes, sweetie I need for him to know that Brennan heard me telling her all the romantic stories about us and somehow got it in her head that she and Booth had all those experiences together. She’s happy because she is in love and believes he feels the same.”

“Okay, but the last dance is for me,” he says as he kisses her before walking away.

Booth and Bones are lost in each other. It’s like no one else is around until…. “Dr. Brennan, may I have this dance?” Confused they look to Hodgins. Booth takes a step back and Hodgins motions toward Angela.

“Okay Hodgins, but I see a stunning woman who is now without a partner. Do you mind?”

“Not at all man,” replies Hodgins.

Booth makes his way to Angela. “What’s up Angela? I think Bones and I were having a good time so you have exactly the length of this song because I’m ready to have her back in my arms,” says Booth.

“Why yes Booth, I would love to dance with you.”

“Sorry Angela, we haven’t had any time alone so we could talk. What were you saying back at the apartment about knowing what was going on with Bones?”

“What I tried to tell you is that there is nothing wrong with her. She’s in love.” Angela continues by telling Booth what she told Bones during her coma, all about all the romantic moments between her and Hodgins. “If you care for her and I know she cares for you, then all you have to do is come clean to her. Tell her that she is confused but that you can be that man. I know you are a romantic and that you love her. This is it Booth. This is your chance.”

“Angela, are you sure. Are you sure this is what she wants? Is she ready for us to have a real partnership, even if it means we can no longer work together?”

“Booth, I think she has wanted this since you two met. She denied it because of that ‘line’ you kept telling her couldn’t be crossed. She compartmentalized her feelings. Isn’t that what Sweets said she was so good at doing? Don’t get me wrong, she enjoys working on cases, mostly because it means she gets to spend time with you, but her true passion is analyzing and identifying ancient remains. Trust me she will be fine if she doesn’t catch another murderer. She was doing that only to help you, to help you gain your cosmic balance. As long as she gets to analyze remains, and still spend time with you she will be great. She is my best friend and I want what is best for her and what is best for her is you. I have never seen her as happy as she has been the last few days and that is all because of you and the life she thinks the two of you are leading. Make that life a reality Booth. Tell her how you feel. Be honest with her and be honest with yourself.”

Booth looks at Angela and pauses for a moment. “Angela, I do love her. I have for a very long time. Are you sure this is the right thing to do, the right time?”

“I’m positive Booth, she’s happy and I want her to stay that way, okay. By the way, she is really upset that she cannot find her engagement ring, so I hope you have a way to cover that.”

The song is coming to an end. “Thanks for the dance and advice Angela”

“You’re welcome and good luck tonight,” she says flashing a mischievous smile “she picked out some very ‘special’ sleepwear.” Booth pauses to consider what Angela is saying. He hugs Angela and makes his way back to Bones.

Song after song plays and with each song the space between them closes. Soon its hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Not a word is exchanged as Bones rests her head on his chest, listening to his heart beat.

Hodgins and Angela watch the couple and decide its time for the night to end. They need time to talk this out, they think. They make their way towards the couple. Angela hesitates as she hates to break up this wonderful moment but she taps Booth on the shoulder and says, “Hey guys. It’s getting a little late. Is it okay if we head on home?”

Shaken back into reality, Booth says “Sure guys, I guess we just lost track of time. Oh, Bones I’m sorry, you must be exhausted. We shouldn’t have stayed out so long. Let’s get you back home. You need to rest.”

“Booth, I’m fine, great actually,” says Bones as she smiles at him.

The friends head back to Booth’s apartment. “We’ve had a great time you guys. We need to do this again, soon,” says Bones. “I’m going to excuse myself. I need to take my medication. Angela, I’ll talk with you tomorrow.”

“Goodnight sweetie.” Angela and Hodgins turn to Booth. “Okay, Booth. This is it. This is the moment. Tell her. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be unsure.” Booth can’t help but smile.

“Hey, you’ve got this one man,” says Hodgins as he smacks Booth on the arm, causing him to shake it off as his hand has just hit pure muscle. “You sure you don’t need me to give you a few pointers?”

The friends chuckle and Booth says, “Thanks but I think I can handle it but I’ve got your number if I need it. Goodnight you guys, thanks for everything.” He gives Hodgins a pat on the back and Angela a kiss on the cheek. As the door closes, he takes a deep breath before turning around.

‘Five years and it all comes down to this moment. Time to tell her the truth.’ He walks back to the bedroom to find Bones. He doesn’t have to look far because there she is, laying on his bed…..sound asleep. He stands, admiring his partner, this beautiful woman with whom he has shared so much. Angela was right, this was definitely some special sleepwear he thinks as he covers her with the sheets and blanket. He goes over to his dresser, opens the top drawer to get a change of clothes, and uncovers a small box. Inside the box is a ring, his grandmother’s ring. Pops had given it to him on his last visit and told him he would know when he found the right woman who was worthy of this ring. Booth chuckles knowing that probably even then Pops knew the ring was meant for Bones. They had hit it off instantly, which is not unusual for Pops, but is extremely rare for Bones. He puts the ring back in the box and closes the drawer. He starts to leave the room to sleep on the couch, but he pauses. He looks back at Bones and makes a decision. This may be the last night in this ‘relationship.’ If she rejects him, he may never get the chance to hold her like this again. He quickly changes into his t-shirt and lounge pants and climbs into bed next to her. He wraps his arms around her waist and he hears her sigh softly as she snuggles closer to him. He whispers into her ear, “I love you.” Utterly content, he is soon asleep as well.

Next morning
Booth is awake. He has been awake for some time just watching her. Watching her sleep, breathing in and out. Booth can’t even explain how complete he feels at this moment. Everything feels right, actually it feels perfect. He has never been happier than in this moment. He brushes the strands of hair away from her face. Bones starts to stir and Booth quickly rushes to the kitchen to get her juice and cereal. Breakfast in bed, ‘wonder if that is in Hodgins playbook’ he thinks to himself. He rushes back to his room and climbs back into bed. The movement causes her to wake up.

She slowly opens her eyes but quickly starts to smile. “Good morning,” he says returning her radiant smile. “Good morning. I’m sorry that I passed out on you last night. I was having so much fun I didn’t realize how tired I was getting. It’s not exactly how I pictured the night ending.”

“I’m sorry Bones, it’s my fault. I should have kept track of the time but I think the night ended perfectly with you in my arms. So what do you want to do today?”

“I’m not sure Booth, I haven’t really thought about it. But I think right now I just want to be here with you.”

They lay there in bed for quite a while, just talking and laughing. Her head is on his chest and he is unconsciously stroking her hair, brushing the strands away from her face. They truly are very good friends and in love. She looks up at him and places a kiss on his lips. He pulls back knowing that if this goes much further he will not be able to control himself.

“I have an idea,” he says.

“Me too,” replies Bones with a mischievous grin.

He gulps and says, “Let’s get up and change clothes. Wear something comfortable. It’s a beautiful day outside and we’re going to enjoy it.”

“Right now,” she says disappointedly.

“Yeah, come on it will be fun. Trust me.”

“Okay, Booth. Are you sure?”

“Yeah,” he replies as he pulls some clothes from his closet. “I’ll be ready in a few minutes.”

Bones heads into the bathroom to shower and get dressed. He dresses quickly and once he hears the water running, he retrieves the ring box from his dresser and puts it into his pocket. He then rushes into the kitchen digging out some food, a blanket, and radio. He chuckles as he is almost tempted to call Hodgins and say ‘what do you think of this?’ as he runs downstairs to put the items in his car. He’s back upstairs waiting in the living room when she exits the bedroom.

“I’m ready, where are we going?” she says.

“Just out for lunch,” he says with his most charming smile as he takes her hand and leads her towards the door.

Park - Bones is sitting in the car, eyes closed as Booth takes the items out of the trunk.
“Are your eyes closed?”

“Yes, Booth. What are we doing?”

“Just humor me Bones, it’s a surprise.” She places one hand over her eyes as he takes the other helping her out of the car. They walk a few yards to a picnic blanket spread beneath a large oak tree. “Okay, open them.”

She’s shocked. “What is this Booth?”

“It’s a picnic Bones. Its such a beautiful day. It’s warm and there is a slight breeze. We’ve never had a picnic before and I thought today was the day to change that. There are no cases to solve, no squints around, just you and me.”

They sit on the blanket and enjoy a light lunch. They lay on the ground looking up at the sky.

“What do you seen Bones?”

“What do you mean? I see clouds.”

“No Bones. I’ll put it this way. What patterns are forming in your mind as you look up at the clouds? Do you see little skeletons?”

She chuckles. She remembers telling him something similar when he swore he saw Michael Jackson on a cheese pizza. They lay there laughing at the differences in what one another sees. She sees a pelvic bone, he sees a butterfly. They close their eyes as the cool breeze blows through the trees. Propped up on his elbow, Booth turns toward Bones. His button up shirt gapes open just enough for Bones to see something.

“Booth, what is that?” He looks down and immediately realizes what she has seen. She places her hand on his chest as her finger traces the outline of a skull tattoo. “When, why, does this have something to do with me?”

“Of course it does Bones, you see where it is. It’s where I was shot, shielding you from a bullet. The tattoo on my wrist is a reminder to me of all that I experienced while I was in the military, the good and the bad. Those experiences shaped me into the man I am today and I never want to forget how I got to this place.”

“And what does this tattoo mean to you?” she says as she looks into his eyes.

Self-conscious he replies, “This skull is a reminder of you, of the best partner I’ve ever had. Of all that we’ve been through, of how and why we first met. You are my Bones and you’ve left a mark on me, literally, that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“Definitely,” he replies as he reaches up and places his hand on the back of her head pulling her towards him. They share a passionate kiss.

As they pull apart, breathless she looks at him and says, “I think it’s time to go back home.” He grabs the blanket and basket as they rush back to his car. Storm clouds are blowing in.

On the ride back to his apartment, they sit silent as the rain starts to fall. He reaches over to hold her hand. She smiles as she softly rubs his hand with her own. They reach his apartment and he drops her out at the door so she won’t get soaked by the now heavy rain. ‘I’m going to tell her the truth as soon as we get upstairs, before anything happens. That is the right thing to do’ he thinks to himself as he parks the car and rushes to the doorway. She is holding the elevator, waiting for him. They look at each other and embrace as the elevator dings passing each floor. The doors open as they again are sharing a passionate kiss.

“Uh, um.” Booth and Bones turn to see Angela and Hodgins standing at Booth’s door with big smiles on their faces.

“Hey guys,” says Booth, “what are you doing here?”

“Sorry if we’re interrupting anything, but we’re just dropping off Dr. Brennan’s car,” replies Hodgins.

“Oh, I forgot all about that. Thanks.” She turns to Booth, “I was thinking of running some errands, getting some groceries, and I know how you feel about me driving your car.”

“Sweetie, I’m so happy for you,” says Angela as she hugs Bones. “I knew once Booth explained everything you would be okay and totally together.”

“Explain what, Angela,” she says as she turns confused towards Booth.

“Angela, we haven’t had a chance to talk yet.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry Booth. We’ll get out of hear. Sweetie, call me.” Angela and Hodgins make a quick retreat as Booth fumbles with the keys trying to open the door.

“Booth, what is she talking about?”

“Just come inside.”

“No, tell me now. What is going on?”

He pauses, trying to decide the best way to explain this without upsetting her. A grim look comes over his face. “Bones, when you were in your coma, Angela and I took turns sitting with you. The doctors told us it was best to keep talking to you, sharing stories, to keep your brain stimulated.”

“Okay,” she replies.

“Well it seems Angela spent her time with you talking about her and Hodgins,” Booth explains. “She told you about their first date and some of the ‘moments’ they have enjoyed.”

“I don’t understand,” she says.

“We’ll their first date they went to the park and have frequented the Egyptian storage room several times.”

“No Booth, that was us.”

He pauses, looking straight into her eyes. “No Bones, that was Hodgins and Angela. Not us. Actually, I guess technically last night was our first date.”

“But we’re a couple, we’ve been together almost 5 years now,” she says tears welling up in her eyes as she shakes her head.

“We have been together for 5 years, as partners, just partners,” says Booth.

“But…..”

“Angela believes that you could hear her as she was talking and somehow got their relationship and our relationship confused. You must of heard the nurse telling the doctor we were engaged so that I could stay with you at the hospital. The doctors told us not to push you, to just let you come around by yourself. Bones, let’s go inside so I can finish explaining everything to you.”

A stern look crosses her face, the smile so bright it shone in her eyes has faded. “No, I will not go inside. You’ve been lying to me. I cannot deal with this right now.” She turns towards the elevator and angrily punches the button. When the doors open, she enters, while he stands in the doorway not allowing the doors to close. “Booth, get out of the way. Let me go.”

“No Bones, not until you hear everything I need to say.” She reaches over and slaps the button several more times. He has known her long enough to know that when she is upset, no one can reason with her, not even him. He steps back and as the doors close their eyes meet, hers filled with tears. He stands in the hallway, punching the wall, ‘no I will not let it end this way.’ He opens the stairwell door and rushes down the steps. Reaching the entryway, he sees her crossing the parking lot, in the rain. He rushes to catch up with her, calling her name. She stops, head hung down, not turning around. “Come on Bones, you’re getting soaked. Let’s get out of the rain.”

“No Booth, I’m leaving. You’ve been lying to me.”

“Bones, I was not lying.” He pulls her under the partial shelter of a nearby tree. “Nothing I’ve done or said the last few days was a lie.”

“But Booth, you let me believe we were a couple, that we were engaged. Why would you do that?” He stands looking at her drenched, makeup running, and she is still beautiful to him.

“You want to know why? Why I’ve been acting this way?”

“Yes, I need to know. You’ve made a fool out of me, Booth.” The tension is thick between them, they’ve disagreed before, but she has never truly been this upset with him. “

Bones you must know that I would never do anything to hurt you. To be honest, I wanted to tell you but the doctors said that it was not in your best interest.”

“So you’ve acted like you were in love with me because the doctors told you to.” They stand there looking at each other. He takes a deep breath. This is it.

“No Bones, I acted like I was in love with you because I am. I love you.”

“I remember Booth, in an atta girl way.”

He smiles, “No, in a can’t stop thinking about you, catching my breath when I get close to you, wanting to wake up to you every morning kinda way. I love you, Bones.” Shocked she is speechless for a moment.

“But what about your ‘line.’ You don’t get involved with those you work with remember,” she says as she wipes away the tears.

“When I was in my coma, and I dreamed that we were married, I experienced a different life. I was happy, you were happy. I think that experience made me realize what I’ve felt probably since the day we met and has only grown over the years. You are the most important person in my life, along with Parker, not my work, not the FBI. I would give it all up for you, for our future. When something good happens to me, I want to tell you. When I’m upset, I want to see you knowing you can always make me feel better. You are worth crossing that line, erasing that line. I have never felt so complete as when you’ve fallen asleep in my arms the last few nights. And I’m sorry but I’m not willing to give that up, to give you up. I’m here, telling you, whatever it takes, how ever long it takes, I’m not giving up on you, on us.” He pauses for a moment as the words are starting to sink in. “My heart tells me I’m in love, my gut tells me you’re worth the risk, but my brain, my brain Bones, knows that you are the woman I’m meant to spend the rest of my life with.”

He stands silent, waiting for her to respond. The tears have stopped. “Come on Bones, I’m putting it all out there. You have to say something. I…..”

She places her finger on his lips. “Shush, you talk too much,” she says as a smile slowly crosses her lips. “When we met, I didn’t believe in love, that our species was not meant to be monogamous. But I see how happy Hodgins and Angela are, even Sweets and Daisy. I want that and I want that with you. You’ve proven to me that I’m worthy of love and you’ve never betrayed me. You are my family, the family I’ve so desperately wanted since I was a child. I love you, Booth, more than you know. I think we need to discuss….”

“Shush, you talk too much,” he says flashing his brightest, most charming smile. He reaches into his pocket and fumbles with the ring. Not today, he thinks, but soon. He pulls her to him, brushing the dripping strands of hair out of her face. They look intently into each others eyes, noses touching.

“I love you Temperance.”

“I love you Seeley.”

They kiss under the tree as the scene fades back and away while the sun peaks out from behind the clouds. The storm is over.

I hope you enjoyed the story. Please leave feedback so I'll know if I should attempt to write another story during the very long summer hiatus.
