Denver Show

This event was the first anniversary of foolishboy's (and my) record label, gestaltrecords. We booked three of our bands, eROTic, Caustic Soul, and Dark Orchid, and then fell into the opportunity of having the Autumns join us. I have LOVED the Autumns' music for several years now, but didn't know anything about them except that this nice gentleman Frankie would email me periodically about show and radio details.

The guys had unexpected delays in getting to Denver and missed their soundcheck and so we were a bit behind, but we managed to get it done between sets. Attendance wasn't bad for a Sunday night in a small theater (around 200), but unfortunately most people left before the Autumns started playing, with the popular refrain of “I wish I could stay, but I have to work at 7am tomorrow.” Blah, friggin' Sunday shows, I never want to do one again. There were only about 30-40 people left for the Autumns show, but everyone was enthusiastic and clearly enjoying themselves. I am terrible with song names, but they did play “Boy With the Aluminum Stilts” which is one of my very favorites, and “Pale Trembles a Gale” as well as a song from their new CD that I recognized and liked, but I don't have a song title for it. I was entertained by the screwdriver-guitar antics! A guitar mysteriously stopped working and they had to quit a little early, much to the disappointment of the fans and the newly-mesmerized.

I was working the Gestalt merchandise table and offered to handle their merch, too (since they were so exhausted from shift-driving and needed showers and food). They had one style of t-shirt, all their CDs, and some small posters from previous tours. Several people bought CDs, including a friend of mine who rarely touches anything other than German industrial. Oh yes, and a girl I knew told me that she was “madly in love with that singer! He's so hot! Is he married? Does it matter?” I laughed and said that I was pretty sure he was unavailable. I didn't have time to talk to anyone but Frankie, who was extremely pleasant and likeable. He joked with us that he came up with a new description for The Autumns. “Because we're not just shoegazer, we're not really goth, we're not really anything. So how about shoegoth?”

On the Gestalt side, our bands played one of their best shows ever. Since it was our anniversary show, we were showcasing our own bands and eROTic (industrial metal) didn't quite mix, but I wasn't about to leave them out of the event because they're very good at what they do. I think Dark Orchid, our female-fronted guitar band that's reminiscent of my favorite band The Church, meshed well with the Autumns, although their sound is quite different. Tonja, the singer, had lost her voice when she arrived, but many cups of hot tea with lemon restored her to her customary vocal power.

Good show--my first time seeing them live--and I and many others are looking forward to having them back. I'll let you know when we post pictures of the show.
