Insurance companies are so sleazy. I'm fortunate my momma taught me to always do my research, but not everyone is as completely psycho about meds as I am.
My health insurance provider, Aetna, sent me a letter informing me that I currently take a brand-name drug (Lexapro) and that there are "Generic Preferred Alternatives" available, which are the "therapeutic equivalent of the brand-name drugs you are currently taking." Now, aside from the fact that sometimes generics aren't as well-controlled as the brand-name drugs (not that brand-name prescription drugs are like totally safe or anything) and don't work as well, I thought, well maybe it'll be worth a try, right? Well, I just looked them up (citalopram and paroxetine) and they're NOT the same thing as Lexapro. Geez, what are these Aetna people trying to pull? Now, citalopram is pretty close, but not identical (there's chemistry stuff involved).
So anyway.
But I am going to see my doctor this week and we'll chat.
Also, uh... I know it's totally bad to throw unwanted medicines in the garbage and also to flush them down the toilet. So I've been hanging on to expired Neosporin and evil old Wellbutrin because I just don't know what else to do with them. I can't find from the website whether Walgreens takes unwanted drugs? The website I check for this stuff (
http://earth911.org/) says there are no places within 50 miles of me for that. So... bummer. I guess I'll have to make phone calls during the day or something. Ugh.
