The Electoral College: How it works, how it hasn't worked, and how we ended up with this weird system in the first place.
If you aren't interested in all these links I've been posting, I hope you'll be patient with me. I'm finding myself far more interested in our government than I would ever have expected. I've always taken the issues I care about most to the polls every 2 years, ever since I was old enough to vote. But this year I've had 2 experiences that changed the way I feel about politics. This spring, I voted for Louis Butler, a moderate state supreme court judge with endorsements from an astonishingly wide range of sources, who lost to a vicious and dishonest smear campaign. It was the first time I voted in an election that wasn't one of the big ones, and it made me feel like I should be paying attention more often than once every 2 years. And then, of course, there was the presidential election. It was empowering to vote for someone who I really wanted to be president, instead of the lesser of two evils provided by the Powers that Be. I think and hope that Obama's legacy as president won't just be the changes he makes in our government - it will also be the changes made by the people he's inspired.
