So my grandma has this sort of lean-to thing outside her back door that's open at one end and has a door closing off the other. She also has a couple of families of quail living around the place.
I went out the back door just now to get rid of some compost, and the entire family of non-bobbly-hatted ones (one sort is Californian, one is Australian, we have both and I can never remember which is which) was stuck at the window by the door at the closed end going FLAP FLAP FLAP HALP WE R STUCK AND CANNOT GET OUT. So I snuck out the open end (FLAP FLAP FLAP THERE IS A HUMAN WITHIN THREE FEET OF US), opened the door from outside and moved some crap out of the doorway...
...whereupon they continued going FLAP FLAP FLAP HALP WE CANNOT GET OUT. Even after I went out of sight. For like fifteen minutes. And I think the reason they were there was because they'd come in the open end to get out of the really heavy rain. That we had TWO DAYS AGO. Hopefully it was only yesterday's slightly less heavy rain, because poor things. D: Also: dear quail, hiding behind the box of plastic gardening crap is not going to help you escape the large predator who JUST MOVED THE BOX.
Picture. I call it Windowsill With Slightly Blurry Quail. (Taken with plenty of zoom, don't worry.) Luckily it figured out that it could leave shortly after this, because I like being able to use the back door.
I also, one time, saw a rabbit fight a quail. Trufax. The quail was walking across the lawn, the rabbit was lurking in the flax, the rabbit didn't like how close the quail was coming, but instead of just running off as you would expect, it charged. o_0
ION, who ever said Northland weather was unpredictable? It rains every day exactly on schedule.
