My TV Story

Apr 17, 2008 08:24

So, when I was on the Penn, I bought a 22" color TV at the BX. it worked faithfully for the last 8 months or so.

I move into the new flat. I arrange to have my stuff dropped off that I had shipped over. They drop it off. Mostly, it's clothes, movies, and books. But, it also has my TV. Woo hoo.

A little info on electronics. US-made electronics use 110v. Brits use 220v. Some appliances automatically adjust. Laptops and most TVs will convert on their own. My laptop did fine. My TV did not.

I plug it in with a plug adapter, and turn it on. Smoke starts billowing out the sides. I just destroyed my TV.

So I unplug it, and open the windows to air the place out.

Now to buy a new one. I found one at the BX I liked, but hadn't purchased one yet.

I made arrangements with the satelite people to set up my service. The guy comes out to hook it up, and says he can't do it if I don't havea  functioning UK TV. US TV won't work because they use different hookups. Awesome.

So I go to the city to buy a TV. I find one for a decent price, and go to check out. And they won't take my card. It's a Mastercard, but most British cards now have a microchip inside. If it has the chip, then it counts as a signature, so you don't have to sign for the purchase. It's supposed to prevent fraud and theft, but I don't see the applicability.

So, no card, no pay. I go home without a TV. I've got money in my account here that i could withdrawl, but it's Saturday and they're not open. I go by on a weekday, withdraw the amount in pounds. Yesterday after work, I drive over to the city to the electronics store. And they're closed. Awesome.

I've already made arrangements for the Sat guy to come by today, so I need a TV for him to hook up my system.

So I goes to the BX, and look at their TVs. I find one that I like, but they're out of stock. I'm talking with two guys that work in the elctronics section; one's an old-school guy who knows his stuff, and the other is a young guy, new to the job, not very confident in his work.

I find one that suits my needs. It has dual voltage, which helps me out. It has multiregional connection, for US and UK systems. All right, we're bsck in business.

I take it home and set it up last night.

Today, I go to trry it out. And the damn thing won't turn on.

Fantastic.

The Sat guy is supposed to be coming by any time now. I don't think he's going to like me.

Yup.

Always
