Old habits die hard

Hmm. Feeling rather tired, but not in that completely incapable of talking, fuzzy-headed kind of way.

So, my latest tactic in my endless quest to Become A Better Person is to try and cut down on chocolate and alcohol. I decided as of about Thursday last week, when I peered over the shoulder of a woman on a train who was reading an article by that Godforsaken woman who does the Ten Years Younger program. You know, the one who looks like a robotic witch. It mentioned how aging alcohol is, among other things. I don't know why it had any impact on me, as I'm always getting pissed off with people thinking I'm a lot younger than I am, but if I'm destined to look like a yoof, I'd rather look like a healthy one, than the type who smokes behind the bike sheds and pukes at the bus stop on weekends. Not that I do either.

Okay, okay, so there's no real logic to why I've suddenly decided this. I suppose I feel like I am too dependent on my glass (or two) of wine at the end of the day. Although I do really enjoy that kind of drinking. The kind where silly things like conversation or other people don't get in the way of me savouring my booze.

So, I'm trying to be reasonable about it. I'm not saying I will stop drinking at home completely. I think it's supposed to be better for you to have a bit each day than binge at the weekends anyway, and I'm not claiming I'll stop drinking socially, so that doesn't really make sense. I bought a bottle of wine at Tesco today. I may or may not open it this week. But I'm going to make myself stop and think about whether I REALLY want it before I do. It's all about the mental attitude. Oh yes.

The less drinking will also almost certainly mean I practise my piano more, as I won't be able to tell myself I can't practise when I'm a bit tipsy. And I really, REALLY need to get my arse into gear about that before my rather strict Russian teacher gives up on me altogether. And when that happens I really need to consider whether I should be taking lessons at all. I've been thinking about that far too much today, and I don't want it to get to that point.

As far as the chocolate goes, I've got more of a clean-cut plan about this. I have started eating far too much at work. I get a pain au chocolat almost every day, and then often have chocolate on top of that. It's just not right. I'm going to try not to buy any chocolate (including the kind wrapped in french savoury goodness) at all at work until Easter. And I'm only allowed 2 squares of lovely mint Green & Blacks after dinner each night. I look back with disbelief on the days when I didn't have any chocolate cravings at all. Once upon a time, I wasn't addicted to chocolate.

This livejournal entry makes for dull reading, but it's my Plan and I thought writing it down would help me stick to it.

I feel better already. I wonder if it will make a difference to how alert I feel if I keep on going?
