UNCONVENTIONAL

There was a soft wind blowing, but the sun was high in the sky as the two girls lay together on the blanket, shielded by one of the trees in Gabriella’s backyard. Kelsi, who was quite close to dozing, felt the other girl sit up, and after a moment, cracked one eye open. Gabriella was beside her, hugging her knees, and looking down at her with a smile.

“What are you thinking about?” Gabriella asked.

“How I wish I could draw, or paint or something,” Kelsi said, and she too started to sit up. “Because this right here, this is probably the greatest scene anyone could ever imagine. It’s perfect.”

Gabriella nodded slightly, “It is,” she said, “But just because you’re not a painter or whatever doesn’t mean you can’t capture this moment. You’re a great songwriter Kels, and I’ll say it over and over again.”

With a self-conscious smile, Kelsi lowered her gaze. “I just don’t think I’d be able to capture what’s between us,” she said slowly. “I don’t really know what’s between us.”

Silence fell over them. Wind chimes sang somewhere.

Suddenly, Gabriella leaned forward and grabbed a dandelion, plucking it from the soft grass. She twirled it in her fingers slightly, and then turned to Kelsi.

“Where do you stand on the whole flower versus weed debate?” she asked, smirking.

“It’s a weed.” Kelsi shrugged her shoulders.

“Come on,” Gabriella said, “Do you really believe that?”

“It’s not a matter of belief, it’s a matter of science,” Kelsi said with a little laugh. “Why?”

“Well I think it’s a flower,” the other girl said. “So maybe it’s a little unconventional-looking, and maybe it grows in places where other flowers won’t -- what’s so bad about that?”

Kelsi’s gaze dropped to the dandelion as Gabriella spun it between slender fingers, twisting and turning it as she thought. A strange thought came to Kelsi’s mind; she could somewhat compare herself to the dandelion, at least in Gabriella’s words. Unconventional-looking. When put next to some of the other girls at East High, she would definitely be the weed in people’s minds.

“I guess you’re right,” she said after a moment. “It is a flower.”

“I tried to tell you,” Gabriella said playfully, and Kelsi smiled.

Gabriella’s velvet eyes locked with Kelsi’s, and for a long moment neither of them said or did anything. The wind chimes were still trilling lightly with the breeze, and there was a strand of Gabriella’s hair that was blowing across her forehead slightly.

Smile growing, Gabriella leaned towards Kelsi this time, reaching up with the dandelion. She slipped it behind one of Kelsi’s ears, and Kelsi blushed. When Gabriella pulled away, there was a different expression on her face, one Kelsi couldn’t place.

“What?” Kelsi asked. “Why do you look at me like that?”

“Well...right now I’m wishing I was the painter,” Gabriella said, more meaning in her voice than the words would let go.

Cheeks heating up even more, Kelsi dropped her gaze to the blanket they were sitting on, a pastel-colored quilt from Mrs. Montez. She realized she was wringing her hands in her lap, though she couldn’t stop. Gabriella just had that effect on her most of the time.

One of Gabriella’s hands was suddenly on Kelsi’s chin, and with barely any force at all, she lifted Kelsi’s face up.

When her soft lips met Kelsi’s, Kelsi melted.

The weed became a flower.

end.
