art & literature:

_name a musician [or group] who has effectively changed your perspective or expanded your thinking. include lyrics that bear some significance to you, and describe their representation of your ideas & emotions.
I feel like I'm being too typical by saying The Beatles. But I guess, out of all the bands I listen to, this one has the most personal significance to me. The Beatles basically wrote the soundtrack to my childhood; my favorite song used to be Hey Jude and Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club with my mother in the car whenever we'd drive to a family get-together. The Beatles wrote so many songs, that its almost impossible not to find one that suits your current mood. Although some of the lyrics are pretty out there, I still enjoy most of the music they've made.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

_explain, in depth, a particular work of art that you find meaningful, and its importance to you on a personal level.

i love this piece. i think it was many symbolic messages about commercialism and how, as children, we idolize impossible standards. when i was a child, i absolutely adored my barbie collection. i thought the dolls were so beautiful and i wanted to be just like barbie. so seeing this piece brought back some fond childhood memories. but also i just love the way its put together, like the basic composition of the painting. i think mark ryden is so very creative and all his works are very unique. i love the originality of it.

personal & political:
_what is one social ill you wish you could change and why? how does this affect you in your daily life, or in the lives of those around you?
i'd like to cure homelessness. no, seriously. that counts as an ill of society, doesn't it? well anyways, i think it would be horrible to be homeless (duh.) and that people deserve to live a decent life and have a place to sleep at night. i guess i should have picked "ignorance" or "too much pressure by the media", but seriously, i think people living on the streets is worse than a white kid who doesnt like black people or a girl who wants a nose job. there are so many things in this world that we take for granted. but, then again, i dont know how i'd go about fixing this "social ill", and if somebody did know a practical way to amend it, i guess it wouldnt be an ill anymore.

_who or what has most inspired your intellectual growth and why?
art! its the way i can express myself the clearest, and i enjoy it to no end. whenever i'm upset, i let out all my raw emotion onto paper and it makes me feel so much better. no joke. artists all around the world that i admire inspire me to create and grow, so i suppose they'd be on the list too.

_do you feel that you are prejudiced?
everyone is. anyone who says they're not is lying (or in denial). in an ideal world, everyone would be treated equally. but sadly, this is not an ideal world and there are major differences that most people choose not to overlook. and i am one of those people that have trouble looking past differences to see what a person's really like. i wouldn't consider myself racist or anti-semitic. ethnicity really has nothing to do with it for me. but it is a major character flaw, yes?

_do you think it is necessary to be politically correct in a learning environment? a working environment?
i think it is necessary. i mean, one cant just say whatever they want all the time... people would get hurt and nothing would get accomplished.

_in our generation, who do you feel deserves recognition as a genius, and why? what characteristics do they possess that are definitive of this title?
in my generation? no one, haha. i guess my standards of 'genius' are too high. i can think of a lot of extremely gifted people, but i dont know if i'd go so far as to say 'genius'. if you know what i mean.

free expression:

_describe your greatest passion in life.
creating something out of nothing. taking a lump of clay and making a beautiful vase. starting with a white canvas and filling it with color. it really is an awesome feeling to see your finished products and compare them to when you first started.

_describe yourself in ten adjectives - five positive traits, and five character flaws.

+
creative
intelligent
appreciative
abnormal
mellow

-
pretentious
stubborn
cynical
jealous
lazy

_insert a picture, poem, letter, or paragraph that is symbolic of your personality.

this is my favorite poem. it has a lot of personal meaning to me, so i decided to post it here.

"the quiet world" by jeffrey mcdaniel

in an effort to get people to look
into each other's eyes more,
the government has decided to allot
each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.

when the phone rings, i put it
to my ear without saying hello.
in the restaurant i point
at chicken noodle soup. i am
adjusting well to the new way.

late at night, i call my long-
distance lover and proudly say:
i only used fifty-nine today.
i saved the rest for you.

when she doesn't respond, i know
she's used up all her words,
so i slowly whisper i love you,
thirty-two and a third times.
after that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.

ps: i thought this application had a lot of room for personalization. and it was kind of fun to fill out, although i just got home from a really long day at school so my answers may not be up to par. heh.
