Today I got a gigantic package in the mail. Just getting mail is plenty exciting, but getting a package is even better. And I knew exactly what was in the package: a sweet electric guitar! Omigosh so fun to play.
Friday night I was playing downtown with Ryan and a guy by name of Jeremiah walked by and heard me plaing fiddle and stopped to listen, then said he was looking for a violinist in his acoustic nineties pop / oldies band. We jammed with him for a while and he seemed pretty cool, and I gave him my number and he said he wanted me to play a show with him on Thursday night. To my great surprise, he actually called me the next day and then I got together with him and some other people Sunday night. He and another guy, Noah, who have known each other for a couple years, both are really good at guitar. Noah, actually, blows my mind. He's like an idiot savant only slightly less idiot and slightly less savant: he is a total flake and is probably drunk all the time but he understands music like I only dream about. A guy they both knew called Scott showed up too to play bass. Noah and Jeremiah had never played with Scott either, so they were kinda testing us out. I feel like they really liked me though, and I was totally amazed by those two. Jeremiah is pretty good at guitar and amazing at keeping things together and being a solid base, and Noah is crazy and somehow breaks any monotony in music. That's pretty much how they are in life too: it seems like Noah has no common sense and Jeremiah has to keep him in line, but he does it despite great frustration because of how amazing Noah is at music. I guess they liked me too, though, so that's cool. Thursday night Jeremiah and I and maybe Scott (they didn't like him too much but didn't want to be jerks to him) and maybe Noah (he might have to work but might not) are supposedly going to do a show at some bar in Kalona. I think I'm in an actual band now? We'll see what happens Thursday.
Actually I'm playing with so many people in so many different styles lately. I'm in an orchestra playing classical music on violin. I'm in that band for work, playing jazz and blues holiday tunes on electric guitar. I play folk stuff on fiddle, banjo, guitar, and whatever else with Ryan. I take fiddle lessons with Al Murphy and learn fiddle tunes. I'm playing again with that electric "rock" group at church probably on electric guitar but maybe fiddle. Now I've got this thing with Jeremiah et cetera. And I'm trying to retain whatever solo performance skills I have built up. This leaves me with something music pretty much every night, and much of the weekend. And also I'm progressing pretty well on fixing up this guy's banjo. It is all kinda wearing me thin to the point that I don't really have free time anymore except late at night but it's so fun. A year ago I would have never imagined this is what I would be doing today.
I can't understand what I had against guitars for so long, and against electric instruments. Guitars really are amazing instruments, and it's really weird and pretty awesome how much I have progressed on guitar in just four months. I have been realizing more and more that guitar and fiddle are my main instruments now and that when I play banjo and mandolin it's like a novelty.
